Né d'un père syrien et d'une mère bretonne, Riad Sattouf raconte dans L'Arabe du futur sa jeunesse au Moyen-Orient. Dans le premier tome (1978-1984) le petit Riad était balloté entre la Libye, la Bretagne et la Syrie. Dans ce second tome, qui couvre la première année d'école en Syrie (1984-1985), il apprend à lire et écrire l'arabe, découvre la famille de son père et, malgré ses cheveux blonds et deux semaines de vacances en France avec sa mère, fait tout pour devenir un vrai petit syrien et plaire à son père. La vie paysanne et la rudesse de l'école à Ter Maaleh, les courses au marché noir à Homs, les dîners chez le cousin général mégalomane proche du régime, les balades assoiffées dans la cité antique de Palmyre : ce tome 2 nous plonge dans le quotidien hallucinant de la famille Sattouf sous la dictature d'Hafez Al-Assad.

Je m'appelle Esther et j'ai 10 ans. J'ai raconté 52 histoires vraies extrêmement intéressantes sur moi (ma famille, mes amis, ma vie, etc.) à Riad Sattouf et il en a fait ce livre très réaliste avec des gros mots (merde-con-putain) parce qu'on parle comme ça nous les jeunes.

C’est bientôt le bac de français – AKA la condamnation à mort –, et Esther se pose des questions sur son avenir : pourquoi pas arrêter ses études en fait mdr ? Pour devenir libraire ? Vivre au milieu des livres ? Mais ça paie moins qu’Instagrameuse il paraît, c’est chaud... En attendant, elle prépare le BAFA, mais tout ne se passe pas comme prévu non plus... 
Toujours accompagnée de son amie d’enfance, Cassandre, sa queen, d’Eva qui organise des grosses teufs sans le dire à ses darons ; et de Léa, en couple avec un dealer (mais « sensible » dans le fond en fait), elle survit au lycée Royal. 
C’est alors que Poutine, le dictateur chauve, attaque l’Ukraine, et c’est la guerre. Et si ça nous arrivait ici en France aussi ?
