The collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna represent some 5,000 years of human creativity from Ancient Egypt through to European painting around 1800.The Shape of Time presents a group of artworks dating from 1800 to the present day by remarkable artists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko, Maria Lassnig, Steve McQueen and Peter Doig.Younger art works have been carefully placed within the rooms of our Picture Gallery, each in active dialogue with an Old Master from the Kunsthistorisches Museum collection. Surveying Lucian Freud's entire career and including many of his most important paintings, this generously illustrated book also explores his interest in historical art and the influence it had on the artist's work. Known chiefly for his remarkable portrait and figure paintings of psychological depth and unsparing scrutiny, Lucian Freud (1922-2011) was one of the most important and influential artists of his generation. His subjects, many of whom were portrayed repeatedly over the years, included his large family and circle of close friends, working-class associates and blue-blooded aristocrats. Accompanying an exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, this book presents the highlights of Freud's working life, a period of almost 70 years, and includes many of his most significant and well-known paintings: self-portraits, portraits of his family, friends and fellow artists, commissions, landscapes and still lives. The selection of works was made with the close personal involvement of the artist during the months prior to his death in July 2011 and includes works from museums and private collections throughout the world. This book also delves into Freud's lifelong interest in historical art, in painters and draughtsmen such as Chardin, D�rer, Holbein, Rubens, Rembrandt, Titian, Vel�zquez and Watteau, and in sculptors going back to Egyptian antiquity. A pioneering exploration of Rothko's deep and sustained engagement with the history of art While Mark Rothko (1903-1970) has long been considered a preeminent figure in 20th-century art, few publications have examined his work within the broader context of Western art, even though Rothko himself continuously sought it out as inspiration. Rothko had a profound interest in history and art history--including Greek and Roman mythology, Egyptian fables, Byzantine and early Italian gold-ground paintings, and masterworks of the Renaissance and Dutch Golden Age. He first traveled to Europe in 1950, starting in Paris and winding through Venice, Arezzo, Siena, Florence, and Rome; along the way, he admired frescoes by Fra Angelico and architecture by Michelangelo. This beautiful book examines the influence of the artist's travels on his oeuvre. It presents Rothko's engagement with important classical and Old Master works, highlighting older techniques and ideas that the artist may have sought to emulate. Works representative of Rothko's entire corpus are beautifully illustrated with full-page color plates.
