The Shape of Time
The collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna represent some 5,000 years of human creativity from Ancient Egypt through to European painting around 1800.The Shape of Time presents a group of artworks dating from 1800 to the present day by remarkable artists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko, Maria Lassnig, Steve McQueen and Peter Doig.Younger art works have been carefully placed within the rooms of our Picture Gallery, each in active dialogue with an Old Master from the Kunsthistorisches Museum collection. As stepping stones they lead our visitors from the point at which the Museum's collections began to the point at which we find ourselves today.Artistic pairings include: BRONZINO - LUCIAN FREUD; BRUEGEL - PETER DOIG ; CARAVAGGIO - FRANZ WEST; CORREGGIO - BIRGIT JÜRGENSSEN; REMBRANDT - MARK ROTHKO; ROMAN ANTIQUITY - PAUL CÉZANNE; RUBENS - MARIA LASSNIG; TITIAN - PABLO PICASSO; and VAN DER WEYDEN - RON MUECK.The catalogue provides fascinating insights into this unique gathering of artworks.Published on the occasion of the exhibition, The Shape of Time at Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (6 March - 8 July 2018).English edition.
