«Une religion de la peur»: c'est avec ces mots que Jean Delumeau, ancien professeur au Collège de France, qualifiait l'histoire du christianisme en Occident, son entreprise de culpabilisation et son obsession de la faute. L'Église n'a-t-elle pas inventé la doctrine du «péché originel» et les affres du «purgatoire»? Cette sulfureuse réputation appelle clarification. D'où vient-elle? En quoi le Nouveau Testament est-il responsable de cette tyrannie de la culpabilité? Et comment comprendre la fortune du péché dans le sillage du Dieu d'amour annoncé par Jésus de Nazareth? À la suite d'autres, c'est l'histoire d'un mal(-)entendu que ce petit livre se propose de retracer, examinant la représentation de la faute et du péché que livrent aux origines du christianisme l'homme de Nazareth, Paul l'apôtre ou encore les évangélistes Matthieu et Jean.

This book, dedicated to the Galatian crisis, combines socio-rhetorical analysis with methods drawn from cultural anthropology. It engages in critical debate with the “New Perspective on Paul,” a scholarly trend that, for a generation now, has been altering the parameters of Pauline studies. Accepting the idea defended by this group of scholars, namely that Paul’s communicative context is one based on social identity, the author sees a change of perspective in Galatians. In the Gospel of his opponents, Paul identifies a perilous anthropological problem: the ancient culture of honor. Linked to the particular issue of a reversion to the Torah, the conflict in Galatia highlights a potentially universal theological problem: the opposition of "the Gospel of Christ" (Gal 1:7) to the anthropology of honor found throughout the ancient Mediterranean. The Epistle to the Galatians, which addresses the preaching of the so-called “advocates of circumcision,” sketches out a human identity (both in its foundation and in its morality) based on grace and removed from worldly principles. It foreshadows the universalizing message that Paul would send to the Romans. A fundamental connection between these two letters thus becomes apparent.

The volume deals with interpretations of Paul, his person and his letters, in various early Christian writings. Some of those, written in the name of Paul, became part of the New Testament, others are included among „Ancient Christian Apocrypha", still others belong to the collection called „The Apostolic Fathers". Impacts of Paul are also discernible in early collections of his letters which became an important part of the New Testament canon. This process, resulting in the „canonical Paul", is also considered in this collection.

Dans la recherche biblique, les consensus sont rares. Formulée par Dibelius au début du xxe siècle, la thèse qui fait de Luc « le premier historien chrétien » en est un. Dans le Nouveau Testament en effet, l’auteur à Théophile est le seul à retracer le devenir de l’Eglise au lendemain de Pâques, composant une œuvre en deux tomes : « Luc-Actes » (B.W. Bacon ; H.J. Cadbury). Si ce geste est original, il n’échappe toutefois pas aux influences et dépendances face aux pratiques anciennes d’écriture. C’est à explorer ces liens que se consacre le présent volume, fruit d’un colloque organisé en 2017 à Fribourg. Entre reprises et développements des modèles et pratiques littéraires de l’Antiquité, l’écriture de Luc, l’historien, est ainsi profilée. In biblical research, consensus is rare. Formulated by Dibelius at the beginning of the 20th century, the thesis that Luke is “the first Christian historian” is one such. Among the authors of the New Testament, Luke is alone in tracing the future of the Church after Easter, composing a two-volume work (B.W. Bacon ; H.J. Cadbury). If this action is original, it does not escape influences from ancient historiography. It is to explore these links that this volume is dedicated.
