Viktor e Liesel Landauer sono una giovane coppia di sposi in viaggio di nozze. Sono a bordo di una Landauer 80 cabriolet, una macchina dell’azienda di famiglia di Viktor, un vero e proprio impero industriale che produce automobili e motociclette. Viktor è di religione ebraica, ma non praticante. Liesel appartiene a una famiglia dell’alta borghesia tedesca. Nella casa dei suoi genitori gli ospiti possono ammirare, tra le numerose opere d’arte esposte, un ritratto della madre realizzato da Klimt. Dopo aver attraversato la Carinzia, i Landauer si dirigono a Venezia, dove soggiornano al Royal Danieli. In occasione di una festa in un antico palazzo sul Canal Grande, incontrano Rainer Von Abt, celebre architetto dai modi eleganti. Von Abt è galante con Liesel, giovane donna attraente e sofisticata e loquace con Viktor, con cui si impegna in appassionate conversazioni sull’architettura moderna. Quando illustra la sua idea di costruzione con materiali non convenzionali come il vetro e l’acciaio, Viktor si entusiasma a tal punto da proporgli di disegnare una casa per loro a Mesto, in Cecoslovacchia. Román výrazného anglického prozaika se odehrává v období "pražského jara" v roce 1968 a zachycuje jak dobové souvislosti, tak i spletité a komplikované vztahy mezi čtyřmi protagonisty tohoto příběhu. Námětem dramatického příběhu je společenský proces, k němuž došlo roku 1968 v Československu. Jeho svědky se stávají i dva oxfordští studenti James a Ellie, kteří o prázdninách cestují stopem po Evropě. Ellie napadne, aby se podívali i do Prahy a oba vzápětí tuto myšlenku realizují. V druhé rovině se odehrává příběh mladého britského diplomata Sama Warehama, jenž se na jednom z diskuzních večerů seznámí s vysokoškolačkou Lenkou, úspěšně zvládající úskalí anglického jazyka. Román se zabývá i politickými odkazy, souvisejícími třeba s krutostmi a zvůlemi padesátých let, a rozehrává nejednoznačné osudy i dalších vedlejších postav. Kromě naděje a opojení, které tehdy ovládaly široké vrtsvy obyvatelstva, pak přináší i skvělé popsané kruté vystřízlivění a probuzení do osudného rána 21. srpna 1968, kdy pásy ruských tanků všechen optimismus nemilosrdně udusily.
