Among the several modern commentaries on the Gita, this one is unique in the sense it is both down to earth and fascinatingly erudite. In explaining every verse, the author, the 13th President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, relates its real connotation and significance to not only what Shankaracharya said in his introduction to the Gita, or how Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda interpreted it in terms of practical Vedanta, but also how it conforms to the thinking of some of the greatest Greek philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.The author also takes the readers on an enlightening voyage of discovery, where they meet Buddha, Mahavir, Tao, Christ and most of the thinkers in the West and he relates their thought by an ingenious interaction with the message of Sri Krishna. The author weaves every verse into the requirements of modern life and throws light on how man should lead his life while involved in his daily chores and fulfil his duties in accordance with the philosophy of action as taught by Sri Krishna. The book contains the Sanskrit slokas in Devanagari script, their English transliteration, simple meaning in English followed by explanation in English.

Universal Message of the Bhagavad Gita

This is the first volume of a three-volume work, Universal Message of the Bhagavad Gita -- a verse by verse exposition of the Gita by Swami Ranganathananda, President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. This commentary was originally given as a series of Sunday discourses, from 1988 to 1990, at the 1200-capacity Vivekananda Hall of the Ramakrishna Math, Hyderabad, and it regularly drew an overflow audience consisting of a cross-section of the city population, including many youths. These lectures, delivered extempore, were recorded, and the audio and video cassettes have reached many homes in various parts of India and abroad. Packed with many stimulating and delightfully refreshing ideas, and drawing upon the works of eminent national and international poets, scientists, authors, and historians, this commentary explains the universal and humanistic teachings of The Song Celestial, as Edwin Arnold called the Gita, in the context of modern thought and modern needs.

भगवद्गीतेला भारतीय शास्त्रग्रंथांमधे एक महत्त्वपूर्ण स्थान आहे. हिला उपनिषद असेही म्हटले जाते. भगवद्गीतेतील जीवनदायी, उदात्त आध्यात्मिक तत्त्व कोण्याही व्यक्ती, जाती, धर्म, संप्रदाय वा देश यांसाठी नसून संपूर्ण विश्वातील समग्र मानवजातीसाठी आहे. या अद्भुत आणि विलक्षण ग्रंथाने शेकडो वर्षांपासून मानवी मनाला उद्बुद्ध करून त्याला प्रेरणा प्रदान केली आहे. खरोखरच गीतेचा संदेश हा सार्वजनीन असा आहे. यामुळे विभिन्न मनीषी, महात्मा आणि प्रख्यात विचारक यांनी या ग्रंथावर अमर अशा टीका लिहिल्या आहेत आणि याचे भाष्य देखील केले आहे. आचार्य शंकर, संत ज्ञानेश्वर, श्रीधर स्वामी, मधुसुदन सरस्वती, लोकमान्य टिळक, महात्मा गांधी, विनोबा भावे, डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन यांसारख्या प्रख्यात महापुरुषांनी आणि इतरही चिंतकांनी गीतेवर पुस्तके लिहून हिचा मोठेपणा प्रदर्शित केला आहे. रामकृष्ण मठ आणि रामकृष्ण मिशनचे तेरावे महाध्यक्ष, विश्वविख्यात चिंतक, वक्ता आणि मनीषी विद्वान स्वामी रंगनाथानंदजी महाराजांनी इ.स. १९८८ ते १९९० पर्यंत प्रत्येक रविवारी रामकृष्ण मठ, हैदराबाद येथील सभागृहामधे या ग्रंथाच्या प्रत्येक श्लोकावर जी विचारोत्तेजक, विद्वत्ताप्रचूर आणि सारगर्भित व्याख्यात्मक प्रवचने दिली होती, त्या प्रवचनांची श्रोत्यांनी अत्यंत प्रशंसा केली होती. ती प्रवचने टेपवरून ऐकून त्याचे पुनर्लेखन करण्यात आले होते आणि ते ‘Universal Message of the Bhagwad Gita’ या नावाने अद्वैत आश्रम, कोलकाता यांनी तीन खंडांमधे इ.स. २००० मधे प्रकाशित करण्यात आले होते. या ग्रंथांची सुद्धा वाचकांकडून खूप प्रशंसा करण्यात आली. वर्तमान भोगवादी उपादेयतावादी, भौतिकतावादी, बाजारू, पोकळ सारहीन अशा विकृत संस्कृतीने आधुनिक मानवाला संशयग्रस्त, तणावपूर्ण आणि अवसादग्रस्त करून त्याला अशांत तसेच उद्विग्न केले आहे. अशा लोकांसाठी भगवद्गीतेचा सार्वजनीन संदेश संजीवनीचे कार्य करतो. स्वामी रंगनाथानंदजी महाराजांनी वेदान्ताचा व्यापक मानवी दृष्टिकोन, एकाग्रता, कल्पनाप्रवण सहानुभूती आणि संवेदना; तसेच पूर्व आणि पश्चिम येथील आधुनिक प्रख्यात चिंतकांच्या विचारांच्या संदर्भामधे आधुनिक जीवनात आवश्यकतांची पूर्ती करण्यासाठी गीता समजून घेण्याचा व समजाविण्याचा प्रयत्न करून विश्वातील मानवांचे अत्यंत कल्याण केले आहे. गीता आपल्याला अवसादाकडून आनंदाकडे घेऊन जाते. ही आपल्याला खंडाकडून अखंडाकडे, हताशेतून आशेकडे आणि अपूर्णतेकडून पूर्णतेकडे जाण्याची प्रेरणा प्रदान करते. ज्ञान, भक्ती आणि कर्म या तीन धारांना आपल्यामधे समन्वित करून गीता आपल्याला समत्व युगाची शिकवण देते. स्वामी रंगनाथानंदजी महाराजांनी आधुनिक जगतातील महान चिंतक – प्रसिद्ध इतिहासवेत्ता ऑर्नल्ड टॉयनबी, प्रख्यात जीवशास्त्रज्ञ सर ज्युलियन हक्स्ले तसेच एरविन श्रुडिंजर, आण्विक भौतिकशास्त्रज्ञ जी. वी. एस. हॉल्डेन, जर्मन दार्शनिक शॉपेनहावर आणि पॉल ड्युसन प्रभृती जगप्रसिद्ध तत्त्ववेत्त्यांचे विचार गीतेच्या श्लोकांची व्याख्या करताना आपल्या विचारांच्या पुष्टीसाठी आणि समर्थनासाठी उद्धृत करून गीतेची सार्वजनीनता आणि वैज्ञानिक दृष्टी विशद करून वर्तमान युगातील मानवासाठी गीतेची उपयोगिता आणि प्रासंगिकता प्रमाणित केली आहे. सद्यस्थितीत नवनवीन शास्त्रीय शोधांद्वारे मानवाने आपल्या बऱ्याचशा भौतिक समस्यांचे निराकरण तर केले आहे, परंतु तो स्वतःच जगतासाठी एक मोठी समस्या बनला आहे. तो पथभ्रांत, उद्भ्रांत आणि श्रांत झाला आहे. बाह्य सुखाच्या शोधामधे त्याने आपले आंतरिक सुख गमावले आहे. त्याला निःश्रेयस – खरे सुख, खरी शांती आणि खरा अभ्युदय ह्यांची प्राप्ती करून घ्यायची असेल तर गीतेलाच शरण जाऊन तिचे जीवनदायी तत्त्व स्वीकारावे लागेल. स्वामी रंगनाथानंद महाराजांनी हे कार्य अत्यंत समर्पकपणे केले आहे.

To know Religion is to know Truth, for that is its basis. And who knows the Truth? Those who have realized It through the unique and specific ways and means leading to It. The enlightened souls and the honest oral and written records they left behind should become the recourse of the wise seeker. Such a seeker hears the Truth contained within the nondual revealed scriptures, then gets the transmission of Truth directly from a realized soul, then practices intensely with dedication and perseverence to realize that Truth. This triple combination produces sages and seers. Reading a few books; giving a few talks; leading a few classes on relationships; fasting, dieting, breathing, and posturing the body; fascination with occult powers; indulging all the many modes of pretended spirituality; intellectual study devoid of any direct experience — when did any of these ever produce an authentic luminary?
