Working as a psychotherapist, Frau Kast has often observed depressive illnesses caused by painful losses, which have not been adequately mourned. Traditionally, mourning has not been a subject of psychologists’ attention. Deși, inițial, complexele materne și paterne se dezvoltă ca un răspuns pozitiv în relația cu părinții, aceste legături extrem de strânse pot deveni un obstacol pentru maturizarea psihică, mai precis pentru felul în care ne construim o imagine de sine, pentru relațiile de cuplu, dar și pentru eficiența în profesie. Formată în psihologie analitică, Verena Kast descrie căile prin care ne putem elibera de impactul negativ al acestor complexe (materne și paterne), recâștigându-ne autonomia, fericirea și bucuria intimității alături de cei dragi. Meritul cărții este că oferă o descriere sistematică a complexelor parentale (discutate inițial de Jung) și că, spre deosebire de conotațiile patriarhale freudiene, revalorizează complexul matern, asociat în pripă exclusiv cu o semnificație negativă. Desprinderea la timp de complexele personale materne și paterne este esențială. Multe probleme din domeniul relațiilor personale, dar și din acela al zonei politice țin de faptul că desprinderile necesare nu s au produs. Scopul procesului de desprindere ar fi să învățăm să simțim propriile noastre afirmații —în loc de afirmațiile mamei și ale tatălui —, propriile noastre sentimente față de o anumită situație, în locul sentimentelor care derivă din complexe. Noțiunea de „complex“ este fundamentală în psihologia jungiană. Nu e de mirare că în descrierea analizanților revin necontenit observații precum: „El are un complex matern pozitiv“. Sau: „Ea are un complex patern extrem de dominant“. La astfel de complexe se referă mereu psihologia jungiană, descriind cazuri individuale sau încrengături de cazuri; complexele materne și paterne însă nu au fost încă, după știința mea, prezentate într o perspectivă de ansamblu.
