This handbook brings together 42 contributions by leading narratologists devoted to the study of narrative devices in European literatures from antiquity to the present. Each entry examines the use of a specific narrative device in one or two national literatures across the ages, whether in successive or distant periods of time. Through the analysis of representative texts in a range of European languages, the authors compellingly trace the continuities and evolution of storytelling devices, as well as their culture-specific manifestations. In response to Monika Fludernik’s 2003 call for a "diachronization of narratology," this new handbook complements existing synchronic approaches that tend to be ahistorical in their outlook, and departs from postclassical narratologies that often prioritize thematic and ideological concerns. A new direction in narrative theory, diachronic narratology explores previously overlooked questions, from the evolution of free indirect speech from the Middle Ages to the present, to how changes in narrative sequence encoded the shift from a sacred to a secular worldview in early modern Romance literatures. Mentale Ereignisse, die die erzählten Figuren betreffen, bilden ein wesentliches Thema von Erzählwerken. Nach der Typologisierung von Verfahren, die Bewusstseinsinhalte der Figuren darstellen, einem Abriss der Bedingungen von Ereignissen und der Kriterien für Ereignishaftigkeit werden klassische Erzählwerke unterschiedlicher Kulturen und Epochen daraufhin untersucht, wie sie Bewusstseinsveränderungen der Figuren gestalten. Der Parcours setzt ein mit den beiden großen Epen des deutschen Mittelalters "Parzival" und "Tristan". An den Briefromanen Richardsons und den weitgehend figural perspektivierten Romanen Austens wird die Entwicklung des Bewusstseinsromans herausgearbeitet. In einem Zwischenteil werden an Werken Puschkins, Ludwigs und Nerudas privative Phänomene untersucht. Der Ereignisoptimismus des großen russischen Realismus wird an Romanen Dostoevskijs und Tolstojs analysiert, und die Ereignisskepsis des Postrealismus an Čechovs Erzählungen demonstriert. Das Buch folgt drei Leitfragen: Welche Ereignis- und Bewusstseinsphilosophie wird in den Werken ausgedrückt? Welche Affinität besitzen Kulturen und Epochen zu Ereignishaftigkeit? In welchem Maße lassen sie die Gestaltung fundamentaler mentaler Veränderungen zu?

Das Problem der Motivierung in Erzählwerken bedarf weiterer Klärung. Das vorliegende Buch unterscheidet zunächst zwischen der Motivation (der Begründung für die Aktionen der Figuren) und der Motivierung (dem Bestreben des Autors, seinem Werk Schlüssigkeit, Plausibilität und Wirkung zu geben). Angesichts der zahlreichen, in der Systematik oft problematischen Typologien der Motivierung zeichnet sich die einfache Unterscheidung von kausaler und künstlerischer Motivierung als hinreichend für eine funktionale Werkbeschreibung ab. Für die kausale Motivierung wird eine Reihe historisch relevanter Sonderformen („Motivierung von hinten“, „finale Motivierung“, Motivierung durch Determination) beschrieben. In einem theoriegeschichtlichen Durchgang werden Konzepte der Motivierung von Aristoteles über den neoaristotelischen russischen Formalismus (Viktor Šklovskij), die fundamentale Kritik Michail Bachtins bis zum frühstrukturalistischen evolutionsbezogenen Ansatz Jurij Tynjanovs betrachtet. Der werkanalytische Parcours setzt bei Boccaccio und Cervantes ein und führt über epochenspezifische Formen romantischer, realistischer und modernistischer Prägung unterschiedlicher Kulturen zur postmodernen Motivierung bei dem russischen Autor Andrej Bitov.

Die Texte, durchweg praformalistischer, formalistischer, formalismusnaher oder strukturalistischer Provenienz, sind zwei kardinalen Themen der russischen Proto-Narratologie gewidmet: dem Sujet" und dem werkimmanenten abstrakten Autor. Auswahl, Ubersetzung, Kommentar und Annotation stammen von Mitarbeitern eines Teilprojekts der von der DFG geforderten Hamburger Forschergruppe Narratologie."

Narratology has been flourishing in recent years thanks to investigations into a broad spectrum of narratives, at the same time diversifying its theoretical and disciplinary scope as it has sought to specify the status of narrative within both society and scientific research. The diverse endeavors engendered by this situation have brought narrative to the forefront of the social and human sciences and have generated new synergies in the research environment. Emerging Vectors of Narratology brings together 27 state-of-the-art contributions by an international panel of authors that provide insight into the wealth of new developments in the field. The book consists of two sections. "Contexts" includes articles that reframe and refine such topics as the implied author, narrative causation and transmedial forms of narrative; it also investigates various historical and cultural aspects of narrative from the narratological perspective. "Openings" expands on these and other questions by addressing the narrative turn, cognitive issues, narrative complexity and metatheoretical matters. The book is intended for narratologists as well as for readers in the social and human sciences for whom narrative has become a crucial matrix of inquiry.

Emerging Vectors of Narratology

The eight contributions to this collection, written by members of the Narratology research group in Hamburg and by external experts, contain the basic categories of Russian and Czech narratology. These became significant for the development of international narratology or for the further development potential of the theory. The studied concepts include fable and subject, subject development, event and fictional worlds . The comparative studies explore and discuss Russian composition theory, the author theories of Slavic functionalism, formalistic film and theater concepts and narrative semantics in the conception of Prague structuralism. The spectrum of the discussed theorists includes the Russian formalist Viktor Shklovsky and the formalism-leaning theorist Michail Petrovsky, the Czech structuralist Jan Muka ovsky, Felix Vodi ka and Lubomir Dole el as well as Yuri Lotman, the central figure of the Moscow-Tartu school."
