Le Clan du Sorgho rouge nous plonge dans l'Empire rural des années 30, où communistes et nationalistes du Kuomintang se vouent une lutte sans merci tout en combattant en ordre dispersé l'envahisseur japonais. A Gaomi, au pays de Mo Yan, le narrateur nous conte l'histoire de son grand-père, chef des brigands du lieu, de sa grand-mère, propriétaire d'une grande distillerie d'alcool de sorgho, tous deux héros de la résistance - tant aux envahisseurs qu'aux recruteurs -, qui mènent les paysans à la bataille. Scènes d'amour, de frénésie et de cruauté, scènes épiques, où l'horreur se mêlent au comique, se succèdent dans cette ode à la liberté et à l'indépendance. Les villageois ne se battent ni par idéal communiste, ni par devoir patriotique, mais par attachement à leurs proches, à leurs héros et, surtout à la terre mère. Le sang coule et inonde de rouge les champs de sorghos rouges et la rivière noire. Le soleil couvre de reflets d'or l'eau, la terre imbibée de sang, les figures des hommes ives et emporte le lecteur dans la tempête, entre rire et douleur. Le Clan du sorgho rouge, publié en 1986, a été le premier grand succès de Mo Yan. Un succès dû à la liberté et à la force du style, face aux canons de l'époque. Reçu comme une remise en cause de l'histoire autorisée des débuts du PC, il a été sauvé de la critique officielle par son vrai héros : le petit peuple des paysans pauvres. Zhang Yimou en a tiré un film, Le Sorgho rouge, qui a reçu l'ours d'or de Berlin en 1988. Le premier des cinq chapitres du roman a été publié par les Editions Actes Sud (Le Clan du Sorgho).
