At first I was like:



Haven't heard of Morgan Rhodes before nor I expected anything much from this book...Magic VS. Reality? Hmm not such a new concept is it?

*unintelligible screech* 


THIS IS IT...the epitome of a good book. Words seemed to pour though naturally from this one, so effortless yet beautifully crafted. A great introduction to a high potential book series to come. It's about friendship, sisterhood, family, and the vast grey area fell between good and evil. It's really hard to describe this book, but let's say it was as equally medieval as modern. It was as adventurous as romantic. It was as magical as real.

The story was fast -paced but in a way that you wouldn't feel left out. The mix up between reality and fantasyland felt neither forced nor out of place. The story told from 3 main characters and I felt a wee bit exasperate every time the chapter ended because I was so engrossed with the character I didn't want their story to end just yet. I don't know how she does it, but she managed to balance the story out really well without them overwhelming one another considering she has to juggle between three different voices.

Crys, a badass heroine (with hipster photographer-slash-tumblr-girl vibe). Her sister 
  Becca
 was in a coma after opened a mysterious book, so she had to do everything in her power to bring her kid sister back, and by everything meant digging up dirty family secrets and involving herself with a secret underground society. 

Maddox was so medievally dorky you couldn't help but squeal NGAWW in his presence (and he and Becca were probably the best thing ever happened in this book, like my stomach fluttered so hard during a certain scene). A witch-boy hunted by a super-villain 
  Valoria
, Maddox realized he was the only one who could see Becca, who didn't even belong to his world. He swore to get her home, even though it meant he'd lost her forever. 

And then Farrell, now that's an interesting character because he was super hot wasn't born bad. Circumstance led him to join a secret society led by 
  Markus King
, whose sole purpose was to rid this world of evil (still debatable), and in order to do so, he'd need the one book that was a key to it all. I'm looking forward to learning more about Farrell's path to villainery in the next book (and how can one ignore the chemistry between him and Crys. Don't even start omg).

The world building was amazing; I had no problems took Mythica in even though I've never read The Fallen Kingdoms before in my life. There would be some magic, alternate universe, time and dimensional manipulation involved. The writing would definitely transport you from Canada to Mythica round-trip throughout the course of the story, smooth and pleasant.

If you are looking for a light fantasy read with a pinch of romance and mystery, this is your book. It will trick you to look one way then came out from another, surprising you with twists and turns. So enough with me ass-licking this book cover to cover. Just get a copy and find out by yourself, it's really worth these unintelligible babble I've been making thus far.

The synopsis of the book drew me in, but sadly that's where it ended. The characters were incredibly two dimensional and "Mary Sue" (even the the villains were stereotypical in their villainy), the plot was predictable, and the book just didn't flow well. I felt like I was reading fanfic, not an original novel. I was very surprised to read the author is a NYT best seller! No offense, I just really did t get that from this particular book. Giving it a two star because the plot really was an interesting idea, I just didn't feel it was executed well.

Well hey, this was pretty neat.

Rhodes basically just made me believe that there is a book out there waiting for me to touch it so I can go into the worlds she created. I mean, how neat is it to think that some of the amazing worlds you read about are real? Like Narnia? Middle Earth? These too classic worlds have lead you to believe they are connected to our world. 
 This book leads you to believe our world is connected to Mythica.



So there is this secret society that basically play judge and jury. They condemn someone who does nothing by hurt the people they come in contact with and feel the power that comes from their mysterious leader. This whole concept is so interesting to me! Because in some way, which I am not spoiling, this secret society is linked to our beloved Mythica. 

A heavy leather-bound book written in an unrecognizable language is delivered to the Speckled Muse by Becca and Crystal Hatcher's Aunt. It was addressed to their mother, but as any responsible daughter would do, Crystal opens it. Becca opens it and touches the book, and is sent into a weird a coma and into the magical world of Mythica.. as a spirit/ghost/lady-who-is-only-seen-by-one-person named Maddox who has a little magic up his sleeve.

Farrell Grayson is probably my favorite character in this whole series. He is the Magnus of this series. He is complicated and torn and rides the line between doing what is right and doing what needs to be done. 

This book takes you back into the world of Mythica and mixes it with the modern day. There are secret societies, goddess (the ones we have heard all about in the Falling Kingdom series), necromancers, ghost, lots of deaths, romance, and really bad decisions. 

So... what else do we need?

So, the standards were high, since the Fallen Kingdoms series is one of my favourites. Unfortunately, I didn't like this book nearly as much. I disliked the characters a great deal, and their relationship with each other didn't feel natural to me. The plot was okay, though I expected this to be set in a fantasy world solely, so I was sorely disappointed.
