I’m a big Alien fan, but I haven’t really delved into the myriad of books and comics. The movies have always been great enough for me. This audio dramatization (not a mere audiobook) features Laurel Lefkow, who narrated Contact, which I listened to and loved, as Ripley; she actually sounds uncanningly like Sigourney Weaver. Rutger Hauer appears, and just like in Blade Runner, he plays an android. Here, however, he gestalts Ian Holm’s antagonistic Ash. Canonically, this is an interesting book. It’s the first book in a new trilogy that ties into the events of the film series, and it features the main character Ellen Ripley. Taking place after the first film (with the a prologue as a dovetail), just like the fantastic video game Alien: Isolation, it goes to some lengths to not contradict the canon. You need some suspension of disbelief to make it work.

Brilliantly produced audio drama from Audible. Out of the Shadows takes place at a midpoint between Alien and Aliens, when Ripley's escape pod docks with a station orbiting a mining colony 37 years after the Nostromo incident. True to the franchise, she awakens only to find out that she made a leap out of the frying pan and into the fire, because the crew of the station have their own encounter with Xenomorphs to deal with, and are now on a trajectory to the orbital decay. From then on the classic Alien action ensues. The story was great, or at least much better than anything the franchise produced in the last twenty years. This is what Alien: Covenant should have been, Mr. Scott. I can't comment on Tim Lebbon's writing per se, but I applaud his ability to construct a story that does not insult the reader's intelligence. The production itself was superbly done. The sound effects, the perfectly convincing acting, the tension and clear narration all created a visual experience in my mind's eye. I'm disappointed book two was not made into a drama.

It is better than the movies yet it is the same old story .. nothing new

i bought this audiobook right when it came out and thought it would be really interesting since it's about aliens and based from the movies. i finally started it and although i enjoyed it, it wasn't my favorite. i love that it's basically just a movie with no picture. there's multiple narrators, sound effects, and a great story behind it. i loved the suspense behind it, and loved that the person who narrates ripely, i thought she did a great job, as did the other narrators. + would i recommend? yes, i would recommend to people who love science fiction and aliens, but there's a lot of language in this audio, so i should probably say if you don't like that or are too young, maybe not. + actual rating? 4/5 + how did i read this? i listened to the audible book

I got this as a freebie from Audible in Jan 2017. This book bridges the gap between the first two Alien movies: #Alien and Aliens. With a full cast production, I liked the additional special effects which greatly enhanced my enjoyment of this #audiobook during my daily commute. #100booksin2017

This was pretty fun. The audible production was great.
