omg if you ever feel nostalgic for like a good YA dystopian novel like the ones we grew up with, this one is fantastic. angels vs humans in a post apocalyptic world?? and really short too! it was surprisingly pretty dark, but i also found myself laughing out loud a couple times. this FMC is really super cool, like genuinely. i enjoyed this and now i will have to finish the other 2 books in this series because of that ending.

Why did it take me so long to finally read this book?! When I started it, I could not put it down. I devoured it. 

Set in post-apocalyptic Silicon Valley where angels have come to destroy humanity, this is a dark world where people will do whatever it takes to survive. Gangs terrify those who remain in the cities while nightmarish creatures roam the night. 

This was such an exciting, perfectly paced book with a kick-butt heroine and a swoon-worthy fallen angel. There is just a hint of romance, but enough to satisfy this romantic fanatic. I can't wait for the next book!

O.M.G. this book. I think I may be in love. Where is the second book? I just reread the last five chapters for the THIRD time.
I need some more Raffe and Penryn.

I have actually known about this book for quite a while. It’s been on my radar for at LEAST six months at this point. What put me off from picking it up for so long, however, was the main characters name. Penryn. I don’t know why but that name just turns me off.
I’m completely fine with it now, though.
LOVE THIS BOOK.

Plot: 5/5
The pacing of this book was fast. We just jumped right in and shit started going down in the very first chapter.
I was ecstatic.
I’m also drawn to the plotline in which angels are not-entirely-good. Thus books like, Angel Burn, Immortal City and this one make it onto my favorites shelf.

Characters: 5/5
Penryn: I loved her voice. She was snarky, blunt, tough and smart. Pretty much my ideal main character.
Raffe: whew… *lets out a long, shuddering breath* love him so much.
Penryn’s Mom: I love insane people. They’re so much fun, you know?
Obi: did no one else think Obi Wan Kenobi when we met him? No one? Just me? That’s cool.
Dee-Dum: I have a thing with Alice in Wonderland. It gives me nightmares, yet I’m drawn to Alice-in-Wonderland movies and books. Probably because I hate myself. But I loved these two, and there were absolutely no nightmares involved.

The Romance: 5/5
Ooh, erg, gah!
I loved their whole relationship. They started out as not-quite-enemies, then they became the torturer and torturee, then the we’re-just-in-this-together-because-we-need-each-other boat, then onto friends NEAR QUOTE: I had been tricked into feeling better, then to Raffe pushing her away for her own safety, then back to the we-need-each-other phase, then the dramatic kiss, followed by (view spoiler)[Raffe saying “You know I don’t even like you,” even though it WAS COMPLETEY obvious to EVERYBODY ELSE that that was COMPLETE BULL SHIT, yet Penryn believed him (hide spoiler)] and then they got to that whole tragedy-type-thing in the last five chapters… oh man, you bet I was hanging on every second, the whole fricking way.

+2 points extra credit because while I was reading the last couple chapters of the Goddess Inheritance and SHIT WAS GOING DOWN, I was still THINKING ABOUT THIS ONE.

Overall grade: 17/15, in other words, an A double plus.

READ THIS BOOK, my husband bought it for me because it was on sale for our Kindle a few months ago. I have a hard time getting into new genres/authors but our internet went out for a whole weekend so I decided to read it. I could not put it down from start to finish, I even read it while walking around grocery shopping. The reviews on amazon for it are spectacular as well. 
There is so much going on and different parts of the story to explore and the characters are great and Im dying for book #2 right now! 

Edit: Aug, 7, 2014 -- this is STILL my all time favorite book EVER!
I want to fangirl all over it and do whatever I can to get everyone to read it! There is supposed to be a movie coming out someday, so read it before it explodes into popularity! DO IT NOW!

I wasn't sure about reading more YA post-apocalyptic stories, but this was recommended to me by Veronica so I gave it a try. It was definitely better than I expected.

With her dad abandoning them, a schizophrenic mother, and a little sister in a wheelchair, seventeen-year-old Penryn had her hands full. And that was before the angels triggered the Apocalypse. Six weeks later, Penryn is doing her best to keep her and her family alive. And that is where this story starts.

There were quite a few things about this book that reminded me of The 5th Wave. I know Angelfall came out first, but I read The 5th Wave before this one. So I could not help but notice the similarities. If you replace the angels with aliens, the two have a lot in common. Similar heroines, end of the world invasions, the quest to save the younger sibling, the male lead who may or may not be on the enemy's side, the weaponizing of children... The writing styles may be noticeably different but the plot outlines have too many similarities. It makes me a little suspicious that The 5th Wave might be a bit of knockoff. And I think Angelfall is the better book of the two.

Angelfall is very fast-paced. The action is pretty much non-stop. This does lead to a shortage of character development though. I would have liked to get to know the characters more. But it is definitely a page turner. Certainly, at times it was a little cheesy, and the writing definitely had that YA feel. But it was easy to read and fun.

What I loved most about Angelfall was the good action! Most people do not realize how rare it is to find a female heroine who is believably good at martial arts. (Another side comparison to The 5th Wave: Cassie was supposed to have Karate training but only demonstrated that in small spurts while at other times she was a bit of a high-strung ninny. And those action scenes were pretty clunky and not realistic.) I could actually believe that Penryn knew martial arts. And the author did not make the mistake of thinking that a badass women needs to vulgar or crude in order to be tough. Swearing like a dumb meathead does not make you tough; knocking bad guys unconscious does. Neither does this story fall into the sexist version of the female action star where she is poured into a pleather catsuit and displays an alarming lack of skills. (I am convinced that most of the bad guys that fight that type of heroine fight knock themselves out just so they don't have to suffer the embarrassment of how inept said pleather-wearing models are! Seriously, those fights are so preposterous!) Most of action scenes sound like there were written by someone who spent ten minutes reading Wikipedia articles on fighting and clearly have no idea what they are talking about. But the fighting in Angelfall was actually believable and realistic. I greatly enjoyed Penryn's levelheaded approach to fighting and her almost tutorial-like commentary on the fights.

Yes, some of the story was a bit over the top. And I could have used some fleshing out on the characters. but I enjoyed Angelfall and look forward to reading the next book. Hopefully the rest of the series will be good and not crash and burn the way The 5th Wave series did for me.

Okay. I read this book much earlier in the year and I'm only getting around to reviewing it now. 
This is one of those book I'd seen SO MUCH hype about, and I was so excited to read it. I love angels and mythology stories and dystopians so mixing it all together sounded like a great idea. 

Angelfall is about a girl called Penryn, who's trying to survive the end of the world. Angels have descended on Earth, ravaging the population and causing widespread destruction. When the angels kidnap Penryn's sister, she teams up with a rogue angel, Raffe, in order to try and rescue her. 
It's kind of a hybrid of Supernatural and The Walking Dead, actually[. 

Okay. I quite enjoyed this but at the same time I don't feel like I enjoyed it as much as others did ? 

POSITIVES:
 I found the characters to be super enjoyable! I really loved Penryn as a hero. She's smart, resourceful, sassy (but not rude or cold) and realistic. She does what she needs to do to survive and I admire her strength of character and her bravery. 

Raffe was a fun character. I enjoyed his dynamic with Penryn, and I especially enjoyed the mystery surrounding him and the other angels. I liked the exploration of angel politics and I liked that his characterisation was based upon biblical depictions of Angels as warriors rather than the popular culture depiction of angels as fluffy and cute. 

I REALLY liked all the things about the Angels culture and social structure. I liked the supporting characters, especially Tweedle Dee and Dum. 

I really liked how dark this was, and how it was gorey and gritty without being overly horrific. It was both fun and dark which was cool. 

NEGATIVES:

I was not the biggest fan of the romance. I found it really awkward and I honestly didn't even see the chemistry. To me, Penryn was WAY too young. (view spoiler)[ I mean, if Raffe is actual Raphael from the Bible then he's at least 2000 years old and in all likelihood much older. Now, if Penryn had been a bit older (like, even in her 20s) maybe I could have gone with it but she's SIXTEEN YEARS OLD and I just fund it a little weird ?? Like I just could not get past this  (hide spoiler)] 

I found some bits of the story a bit "overdone". I mean, sister needs to save sister - never seen that before in Dystopia amirite. ???? And idk just the whole thing was sort of, been there done that. But it was okay I didn't HATE IT and there was enough originality for me to skim past it. 

Anyway, overrall I'd give this a 3.5. At the time, I have it a 4 but looking back this story doesn't excite me, you know? Like I've not been tempted to pick up the nest two books at all. This was a fun for me but I didn't love it so I'm giving it a 3.5 for really liked some bits of it but overrall I liked it and didn't love it

           i finished this book so fast because of how good it is, it’s terrifyingly amazing? i was on edge the entire time i was reading it, so much was happening at once like i’m literally surprised penryn is still alive, but so many of my questions were left unanswered by the end of the book, i’m pretty sure it’s all explained in the second book tho. it would’ve been nice to get raffe’s pov at least once to see how he’s actually feeling but overall it’s an amazing book!

Unexpected but extremely addictive and fast paced. I didn't know what to expect from this. I knew that there were angels but when I started this, I was easily sucked into this hellish world. Fallen angels never seemed so devilishly scary before.

Well. Damn. Raffe and Penryn are such fine mfs!! And the plot— SOMEHOW IT JUST KEPT GETTING DEEPER AND MORE INTRICATE WHILE ALSO CONNECTING EVERYTHING TOGETHER!! Ugh, and don’t get me started on the angst this book possesses, it hits right in the gut. Am I about to go and purchase the next books? Yes. I NEED ANSWERS, I’M NOT OKAY.

Anyway, get your hands on this book, seriously, you won’t regret it. Admittedly, when I initially picked it up, I wasn’t expecting much (not that I was expecting it to be bad, but more simple ig) but oh boy was I wrong. Definitely a new favourite!!

I was torn about the rating for this book. On the one hand, it's an imaginative take on a post-apocalyptic world that was different from many other books in that genre. The premise was what immediately caught my eye and made me want to read this. Unfortunately, the book didn't quite live up to its potential. My biggest problem with Angelfall was the lack of explanations for why the world had become how it was. I feel I saw the beginnings of some really great ideas, but not enough follow-through to develop things fully. For me, there needed to be a lot more worldbuilding. It was hard to stay invested in the story when I still wasn't exactly sure what was going on.

Quick read, fast pace, recommended by a friend. I’m super intrigued About the next book. Angels? Bad? Who would’ve thought, makes you think about a lot of stuff lol, kinda creepy but nothing huge. Love the main characters!
