*A decent mystery, but I’m not feeling the love*


Mystery series are great palate cleansers in between heavy reads. They are entertaining and quick to read. Add in some romance and some paranormal mojo, and you’ve got yourself some nice brain candy.

I liked the first book in the series, Southern Spirits, well enough. The mystery element didn’t shine as much for me in the sequel. The overall plot was fine, but it felt less like a whodunit mystery. It’s also disappointing that Verity doesn’t have anything special about her. The only reason she was able to do anything in the book was with the help of her accidental ghost accomplice, Frankie. She doesn’t actually have supernatural powers or even much in the way of deductive reasoning – which makes her one of the most over-ambitious amateur sleuths I’ve ever read.

The romance angle was also a bust for me. I was dubious in the first book. Frankly, I don’t see any guy being worth the massive drama of dating your d-bag ex-fiancé’s brother especially while said ex-fiancé and his evil mother are actively trying to ruin your life. And frankly, I still don’t feel any real chemistry between Verity and Ellis. I just wasn’t feeling it. So while the story was good enough to read, I don’t have any interest in continuing on with this series.

It is a second book that in this series and I loved it. I just couldn't put this book down, it was that funny and entertaining. The mystery was well developed and there were few plot twists, that I didn't expected at all and, of course, I didn't have a clue what a real murderer was. 
All interaction with paranormal realm only gave this book more charm. I loooved it! Great book for a cozy evening.
