* 2.5 stars - (1 week later i rounded down to 2 stars bc the more i thought of it the more it was just okay)

first 60% of this book: 🤔🙄😒
last 40% of this book: 😍😱

overall thoughts on this book: tfw you forget you ran yourself a bath and you rush into the bathroom only to realize the bathwater is lukewarm by now but you get in anyway bc you don't want to waste it and spend only like 10 min soaking until you get cold and get back out. but at least you got to enjoy 10 min of a bath instead of no minutes of a bath? i guess????

i'd probably rate this a little higher if i didn't hate the writing so. goddamn. much. i have not cringed and rolled my eyes this much at a book in a long while. (who the fUCK says "hells yeah?" unironically? multiple times??? sometimes i wish i was jared, 19 ...) by the end i was legit happy to be done reading it, even tho i really loved the friends-to-lovers aspect and thought drew and trent were both really cute and sweet. that's the only reason why i didn't dnf it tbh. also i literally did not once feel like i wanted to highlight anything, and that alone tells me a lot bc i'm a serial highlighter/notation writer.

alsooooo this ends on a cliffhanger, which i fucking hate in romance unless it's explicitly going to be a series about the main characters in all the books (and from what i can see from the summaries, it's not) and i wish i had somehow been warned of that lmao. why drag this out into 2 books? it's so unnecessary?

tl;dr - first book is just okay, second book is a smidge better but it really should've just been one book, overall cheesy/annoying writing but an okay friends-to-lovers, but with a lot of little annoyances along the way making it way less enjoyable than it had the potential to be, and in the end feeling a little too far on the side of "fetishization of gay men for straight white women" for my tastes tbh

joke: no homo bro
broke: "i'm gay for you, but i'm not really gay"
woke: a character owning their sexuality without shame even if the label doesn't fit perfectly, because sexuality is fluid and ever changing and evolving
bespoke: everyone's queer unless proven otherwise

i kind of expected to love this more than i did but it was still a pretty enjoyable read.

the bits about racecar driving were sometimes a little boring to me simply because i have no interest in that sort of thing.

i think the romance developed really well and didn’t feel too drawn out as can sometimes happen with slow burn.

I don't care about cars and this felt quite mediocre. I kept reading in hopes it would get better and it never did. Also very heavy on the slut-shaming and stereotyping of women? I wish authors would learn that it's possible to write masculine gay characters that aren't constantly being sexist. Bad vibes.
