Prized is the sequel to Caragh M. O'Briens dystopian novel Birthmarked about a society where children are taken from the poor who live outside the wall, to aid in the repopulate the poisoned genetic pool of the rich city dwellers. In Prized Gaia has escaped with her newborn sister and found the village in the Dead Forest; only in finding safety in the matriarchal society Gaia must give up her new sister and Leon.

What I Liked: Gaia is as sweet as ever and is faced with a whole new set of challenges. Instead of having to fear a patriarchal Government where the poor are forced to give up their children, she now belongs to a matriarchal where women are not only in charge, they are expected to live with strict rules - including one requiring them to have ten children to save their dwindling population.
Leon is could be one of my new favourite literary men (along with Four - Divergent, Valek - Poison Study, and Bran - Son of the Shadows). He was so passionate - angry but passionate; his feelings for Gaia are so obvious, you can feel his hurt and his betrayal. They also have one of the best and most realistic fights I've ever read. Instead of sounding forced and monologuing, it comes out natural. You can feel their frustration, their hurt and their determination.

What I Didn't Like: Mostly, my only issue was with some of the science behind the story. I know thats a common complaint from me, but how much do you know about genetics and computers and other technical jibber jabber? I can follow the general gist of things, but sometimes I have trouble grasping the details.

The final instalment Promised is due out in fall (U.S), or Spring here in Australia. I look forward to seeing what happens to Gaia, Leon and her little sister Maya.

Having escaped from the corrupt Enclave, Gaia ventures into the wasteland with her baby sister, Maya, hoping to find a settlement that's rumoured to lie in the Dead Forest. After days of travelling, Gaia is close to death when Peter, a ranger from the mysterious village of Sylum, finds her and takes her back with him. Gaia soon realises that Sylum has as many strict laws as the Enclave she fled from, but when Maya is taken from her by the ruthless village leader, the Matrarc, Gaia is forced to stay and submit to their strict social code, or risk losing her sister forever. But Sylum is in trouble. The population is falling and the amount of women dwindling dramatically, and with a deadly fever affecting striking down anyone who tries to leave, the future is bleak for the village. Desperate to escape with her sister, Gaia is determined to uncover the secrets of the village, whatever it takes. And when Leon is captured too, Gaia is faced with another tough choice between the boy who captured her heart in the Enclave, and Peter, for whom she can't deny her growing feelings. But when the decisions you make affect the lives of everyone around you, how can you be sure you're making the right choices?

           I loved "Birthmarked" so much and I think I might love "Prized" even more. Gaia is a lovely character. Sylum was a very interesting community and I hated the Matrarc with my all my heart. I was actually happy when she finally died, because I really disliked her. That's a good sign though, because the book has to be quite good for me to develop such strong feelings towards a character. The love square was a bit too much though. Leon is not my favourite, I prefered Will.

I was pleasantly surprised when I started this series. In many ways, it follows the familiar formula of ya dystopian novels (girl does not realize she lives in an oppressive society until something tragic happens, she defies the society, she meets a boy, etc, etc) but it's a very interesting premise. I couldn't put down Birthmarked or Prized. The third and last in the trilogy doesn't come out until next fall!

eh. this wasn't as good as the first one. the only good thing about this was leon with maya like holy damn that's the cutest picture ever.

Southern Today Gone Tomorrow

Written by Caragh M. O’Brien, this novel follows Gaia Stone as she tries to make a new home in a land with strange customs and a mysterious illness that prevents anyone from leaving town.

If you enjoy dystopian novels that DON’T focus on insane fighting, you will enjoy this novel. I have mixed feelings about how some of the relationships played out in this novel and how they handled character development of Gaia herself, but this was a good novel.

It is a bit of a thought provoking novel. In this society, women rule and men have no say. This is a look at how, just by changing the sex of the rulers, that doesn’t make a bad system suddenly work.

Overall, I enjoyed this novel. The writing was done well and the pacing of the story was decent, keeping the story moving.

Fans of YA will enjoy this novel, and those who are looking for a different type of dystopian novel.

Depois de uma viagem pelos Estados Unidos a ter feito pensar nas alterações climáticas e, consequentemente, politicas e sociais que o nosso mundo está e irá continuar a sofrer, Caragh começou a escrever uma história e em 2010 abandonou o trabalho de professora para se dedicar a ela a tempo inteiro.
Essa história seria Birthmarked, o primeiro livro da sua trilogia distópica dedicada à genética. Prized é a continuação, publicada em 2011. Ganhou um prémio e está traduzido para seis línguas.
Depois de um primeiro volume viciante mas, em qualidade, apenas satisfatório, com algumas falhas que provocavam alguma comichão no leitor, não eram muitas as expectativas para este Prized mas, a verdade é que, contrariando a tradição de um segundo livro mais fraco, este acabou por se revelar muito superior ao seu antecessor. Caragh M. O’Brien conseguiu superar os problemas de Birthmarked e, desta vez, criar uma narrativa, que apesar de não ser perfeita, mostra a capacidade da autora em criar sociedades plenas de realismo e em compreender as relações humanas, principalmente, entre homens e mulheres. Talvez das distopias mais interessantes que já li, Prized continua a história de Birthmarked mas de uma maneira melhorada e mais excitante.
Mais uma vez, temos uma sociedade distópica cuja base e problemática é a genética e reprodução, que são afectadas pelo ambiente e local em que a sociedade reside e pelas drogas que tomam, provocando graves problemas no desenvolvimento dos fetos e, consequentemente na sociedade, bem como, de alguma forma, enclausura os habitantes de Sylum dentro dos seus limites. Nota-se o cuidado e estudo da autora em cada pormenor e como tentou manter as coisas simples mas de forma que fizessem sentido para um leitor não habituado a estes temas. 
Para além disso, apostou numa sociedade matriarcal muito própria, em que as mulheres mandam e os homens são submissos e, ao mesmo tempo, as mulheres são rebaixadas ao seu papel mais baixo, o de esposa e mãe, enquanto os homens podem em determinadas ocasiões exercer os seus direitos sobre eles e, em caso de uma gravidez fora do casamento, é a mulher, apesar do seu papel precioso, a ser punida. A forma como a autora estruturou esta sociedade, usando para criar as leis coisas simples como o toque, demonstra a sua profunda compreensão das relações e emoções entre homens e mulheres, tornando esta sociedade uma pequena delicia em termos sociais e comportamentais.
Em termos de enredo, a história tem mais pontos altos e mais situações de tensão que o livro anterior, o que o torna de imediato mais viciante, apesar de Birthmarked ter o mesmo passo rápido de leitura. As questões morais que são levantadas ao longo da narrativa servem para o leitor tentar compreender a situação e posição das personagens e deixam-nos a pensar no que faríamos no seu lugar, enquanto nos envolvem ainda mais na história. Para mim, a única falha ainda visível neste livro é a forma como a autora às vezes não consegue lidar com as dúvidas das personagens e as suas relações e, em casos de morte, ir sempre pelo mesmo caminho. Mas, no global, são falhas a que conseguimos fechar um bocadinho os olhos.
Quanto às personagens, a Gaia tanto consegue irritar-me como estou a louvá-la no minuto a seguir, isto porque ela segue muito a consciência por um lado, e tenta sempre practicar o bem e facilitar as coisas com muita calma mas tem uma tendência nata para se revoltar nos piores momentos e perder a coragem nos que não devia. Gaia, eu preciso que acertes o timing! Já o Leon, consigo compreender na perfeição o seu estado de espírito neste livro, já que passou por muita coisa e a Gaia não facilita. Falta de timing lá está. Mas ele continua a ser a minha personagem preferida. Moço, estou a torcer por ti! Já o pessoal de Sylum, gostei muito das libbies e da Peony, tenho uma relação estranha com a Matriarca e estou dividida quanto aos irmãos Chardo. Sim, o Peter é um idiota e o Will é um querido… mas não é o Leon.
Numa perspectiva e temática diferente, Prized é uma continuação genial de um livro mediano que merecia uma maior atenção dos leitores, nem que seja pelos seus temas e por este segundo livro.
