Clare Vanderpool

"Odyssey-like adventure of two boys' incredible quest on the Appalachian Trail where they deal with pirates, buried secrets, and extraordinary encounters"--

Navigating Early

We finished for the sake of finishing, but my kids and I found the pace of this novel to be very slow. It’s a good story and the friendship between Early and “Jackie” is the best part, but we had a hard time sticking with it.

I put off reading this book because I did not enjoy Vanderpool's Newbery winner at all. I am so glad I gave this author another chance. The story of Early and Jackie and their quest on the Appalachian trail was entertaining and engrossing. I listened to the audio book and quickly found myself invested in the characters and fascinated by Early's ability to see texture and color in numbers and the story that he tells as he figures the number pi. Great historical fiction with an easy curriculum tie-in to both Math, Social Studies and Geography.

I was NOT in LOVE with this book. Good story but I think it was a little old for the intended audience.
