The consequences of war, dictatorship, revolution and violence are not described down to the smallest detail, but they always cast a shadow over the entire plot. The faun, its fairies, and other creatures are no exception and, by their ferocity or cruelty, fit into the book's dark atmosphere. The ending is equally sad and hopeful.

Eine ziemlich wörtliche Übersetzung des Films in ein Buch. Hinzugefügt werden "lediglich" ein paar kurze (und durchaus poetische) Märchen. Dafür verschwindet allerdings die Zweideutigkeit der Interpretation, die den Film so besonders macht. Wenn man die Magie "at face value" nimmt, wo bleibt dann die Eindrücklichkeit des Erzählten? Wenn Ofelia wirklich eine verwunsche Prinzessin ist, wo ist dann die Tragik der Geschichte? Dann löst sich alle Gewalt und Brutalität am Schluss nur in Wohlgefallen auf - und das ist ja eigentlich gerade nicht das, was der Film erzählt.
