"Émile Zola's 1890 novel La Bête Humaine ... was adapted into a film, directed by Jean Renoir, in 1938. Although the story is quite bleak with several murders and a final death, it is oddly fascinating. The movie performances by Jean Gabin and Simone Simon are outstanding and portray great humanity. I created twelve monotype printed on pages of a French edition of the novel. I followed the storyline from the film La Bête Humaine and not the novel, which Renoir changed. Viewing the prints in sequence tells the altered story. The printed pages are assembled in an accordion format and reattached to the original cover which has an original book jacket"--Prospectus.
