I loved this one a bit more than the previous one. I loved the time travel aspect and I loved the interactions between (view spoiler)[smoll Artemis and not so smoll Artemis (hide spoiler)]. And some things happened in this book that made me go (!!!!!!!!!). It did kind of put me in a little Artemis Fowl slump, cuz I did pick up the next book right after finishing this one but couldn’t get through it. So I’m going to put them on hold for a bit and probably finish the series in May (because of the OWLs).

I’m going to say this just as simply as I can. I love Artemis Fowl.

There. Now you know. These books are just the type of book that makes me happy. Even better is getting a phone call from Sir Megabyte at the soon-to-be-closed bookstore telling me he found not one, but two for super-duper bargain prices.

He brought them into my house and I greedily snatched them up, knowing they would be my next two books to read.

That is how much I love Artemis Fowl.

This book had everything I love about Artemis Fowl and then some. In the latest adventure, he must travel through time to go up against his younger, diabolical self in order to save her life. Nothing says crazy than fighting your younger self. Nothing makes you really do some self-reflection than going toe-to-toe with the you of yester-year.

Of course, when you throw in time travel, you add in all sorts of extra insanity. Which I was happy that Colfer played up. I saw several of the twists coming a mile away, but in this case I was excited because it meant that Colfer really put some thought into his time travel escapade he sent Artemis and Holly on, unlike what most writers. (I’ll admit, I loved this aspect of “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, too.”

The paradox was there, showing the exact issues with time travel. Exploring paradoxes can be fun. (But not in that awful last “Star Trek” movie sort of way where even the paradox formed does not explain the idiotic major continuity errors such as birthdays. Then it’s just painful and makes me crazy.)

Of course the ending left you groaning as you say to yourself, “Oh dear. That’s SO not good.” And immediately going, “Where’s the next book?”

Thankfully, sitting right beside me. Sometimes it really pays off to be behind in reading.

I really feel that this book deserves 3.5 stars. It’s a good book, but I thought this book hearkens back to earlier books too much. It also goes back to well known villains from earlier books, which I thought was a bit dull. With this book, I prefer it when they introduce new and exciting things as opposed to rehashing old successes.

Time travel, for me, has always been a tricky fish. As much as I like a good episode of Doctor Who, chronological inconsistencies bug me. Fortunately, with this book, you knew how it had to go at the end when Artemis's memory was faulty. However, the title of the book was a bit misleading as a result of knowing. Still, I'm very glad that the time line was handled well - though the ending might result in a curve ball in future stories.

Which brings me to my main complaint. I am so tired of Opal Koboi. She's supposed to be a super genius, but all she really seems to be is a horrible person. She's mean to literally everyone, yet somehow has loyal followers, and her hubris is always her downfall.

The plot of the book was also quite specific. I'm wary of giving away too much, but it was obvious that it was a set up when the one animal Artemis had a hand in doing away with happened to be his mother's salvation. It made me do an eye roll.

And my last notable complaint is the weird romance arc between Holly and Artemis that the author tried to push. I mean, come on, he's a fourteen year old and she's obviously an adult. It was sketchy. Height difference isn't an age indicator guys. I really hope this weird romance doesn't continue into later books.

I'd still recommend the series and the book, but only to those who are reading the full series - otherwise this book will make absolutely no sense.
