Ifyou'd like to quickly round up a whole lot of assholes all in one spot I suggest going to the airport. In a normal environment I'd say that about 5 percent of any nearby population are assholes. FYI: another 2 percent are total bastards. Ten percent are fine but think they're better than you. Ten percent are awesome unless you push them too hard and then they get sort of stabby. Probably .0001 percent are serial killers or people who intentionally make pants too small. About 32 percent are awesome but secretly suspect that there's something very wrong with them (which there is, and that's why they're so awesome). Six percent are questioning the validity of this breakdown right now and want to See the raw data. But I'm not going to give it to them because this is not d Dook about statistics. Besides, 37 percent of all statistics are made up On the spot so I'm not sure what you're expecting from me.

Whenever I start to doubt if I'm worth the eternal trouble of medi- cation and therapy, I remember those people who let the fog win. And I push myself to stay healthy. I remind myself that I'm not fighting against me... I'm fighting against a chemical imbalance. ..a tangible thing. I remind myself of the cunning untrustworthiness of the brain, both in the mentally ill and in the mentally stable.

Oh I loved this! I literally laughed myself to tears half the time and felt so seen and understood with my mental health the other half ❣️❣️

I was definitely under the impression that this would be my new favourite since Jenny Lawson's first book is hands down the funniest thing I've ever read. I was slightly underwhelmed; the stories are not as funny and often come off as annoying (she needs to tone down her hyperboles.) Having said that, I'm still giving it 4 stars because she is an awesome person and deserves it. Keep on keepin' on, Jenny.

3.5 stars, I really enjoyed this audiobook, but some parts were a bit too forced to be funny for my taste.

I love the narration by the author, her voice is enjoyable to listen to and her tone is cheerful, which goes perfectly with the tone of the book. I love her sarcasm and her intonations were on point, which I guess is generally the case when an author voices their own work (first time listening to this type of audiobook for me). 

I enjoyed the parts about depression and her views on the matter SO MUCH! They were on point, relatable, and full of feeling. It made me feel like I found someone who could understand me. 

I didn't enjoy the "funniest/craziest" parts so much. What I mean is the funny parts were, well, funny, and I laughed out loud several times on the street, or on the train. That was a great experienc.e Howeer, some parts were a tad too much for me, when she was going really far with a crazy anecdote and exaggerating it a lot. 

Overall it was a very funny book and I really enjoyed the audiobook experience, but I would like to purchase the paper version just to be able to highlight and go back to some of those chapters on mental illness which really resonated with me.

Furiously Happy has been a book on my TBR for ages. I enjoyed the chase of trying to find this book. Then lucky me has a special person in my life who managed to find me a copy. I got to borrow this book and binge it, and man was it exciting!

This book is full of wacky comedy about how mental illness can be wild but livable. Depression lies guys. Life may be awful sometimes, and we may feel like we're crazy, but we have ways to enjoy our lives and live. 

There were so many parts of this book I related to, and even more that I was able to chuckle along with. With my own mental health issues, it was awesome to be able to read about someone else who experiences similar struggles and feels similar to me. That's awful to say, but it made me feel more... normal? Plus, Jenny puts it in a really amusing light all the while being totally real about it. All that and more made me respect Jenny Lawson beyond belief. It's hard to make a difficult topic like mental illness seem funny but realistic at the same time. Making tough times fun is the best way to get through them, especially in written form.

The late night comments had me laughing a fair bit, because we totally all do that. I wake up at night and think some of the weirdest yet most true and relatable comments. And yes Jenny, Benedict Cumberbatch is totally the Benjamin Button Alan Rickman, I totally agree. I too have thought something similar to that. 

Also, the cover. Seriously, Rory is cool. Did you know there are two Rorys (is it Rorys? Rories? Who knows)? And they are both super cool and cute! Who knew taxidermy could be so wickedly awesome?

I can't lie, I needed some comedy like this in my life. It's real and tells a lot of truths, but it also just gave me giggles for days. This book is full of short blurbs, stories and comedy bits, so that made it easier for me to pick it up in bits. While I wanted to binge, I needed this level of funny for days.

I will admit, this is another niche book. You're gonna love it or you're gonna hate it and there seems to be no inbetween. I know reviewers who hate this book with a passion. I, on the other hand, found it ridiculously awesome and hilarious. It might not be your cup of tea, so reader beware!

Great job Jenny Lawson. Love it!

There's a quote from 'The Breakfast Club' that goes "We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it." I have it on a poster but I took a Sharpie to it and scratched out the word "hiding" because it reminds me that there's a certain pride and freedom that comes from wearing your unique bizarreness like a badge of honor.

This book is a humor memoir about depression which author had experienced and it is funny in a serious way. As a patient who has a crohn’s disease I feel myself on the edge sometimes and the book helped me to accept that it’s ok.
It doesn’t matter who you are or what mood you have, you should read this book to understand that we’re all mad in here.

Ugh. I couldn’t finish this book but because I spent more than two months trying to finish it I will go ahead and count this one. 
It started OK. I even highlighted a part about depression where she talks about how those of us (me too!) survived depression should wear a ribbon or a badge proudly like people who survived cancer. I fully agree and I will remember this part only and that is why I gave two stars. 
When we went into lockdown, I thought it would be nice to listen to this book while walking in the park. Horrible, horrible idea. 
The author has such a voice that I was like shuuuutttt upppppp. I just couldn’t stand it. It is high pitched, fast, chaotic... And I gave it a chance! I listened to it for two hours or more. And I am not those people who don’t like listening to woman. I literally only listen to female podcasters. 
Anyways afterwards I tried going back to reading the book but the author’s voice got stuck in my head and I was narrating the book in my mind with her voice which was as unbearable as listening to it. 
And I waited for a week to pass so I forget the sound of her voice and can read the rest of the book but by then it was completely spoiled. I think I don’t ever want to have anything to do with this book ever again. I think it triggers my chronic anxiety.

I AM GOING TO BE FURIOUSLY HAPPY, OUT OF SHEER SPITE.


This is the memoir of a blogger who has numerous health issues both physical and mental. From what I remember, she has described herself as having clinical depression, severe anxiety disorder and personality disorders which make her want to stay away from people. She also has rheumatoid arthritis, some auto-immune diseases, self harm issues and mild OCD. And she has decided to be Furiously Happy out of spite, because she is tired of being sad. 



Jenny Lawson is very funny. Like, in a very insane, bizarre, what the fuck did she just say kind of way and her blog is so so so amazing. I only recently got to know about her and her blog/books. This was my first ever book by her and let's just say I haven't laughed out loud so much in a while. 
I loved reading her random anecdotes about snakes and cats and koalas and sleeping on the floor. But was there a point of connection or coherence between all of these random anecdotes? I don't know. Don't get me wrong THEY WERE HELLA FUN TO READ INDIVIDUALLY but to club them all together in a book? I don't know where we were going with that. 



I wish someone had told me this simple but confusing truth: Even when everything’s going your way you can still be sad. Or anxious. Or uncomfortably numb. Because you can’t always control your brain or your emotions even when things are perfect.



There were a lot of serious issues touched upon here, but none of them were discussed in any seriousness anywhere in the book. Whenever it came to it, the topic was deflected with pointless humour and never checked back again, which is kind of disappointing. If you're looking to learn something about any of these issues from this book, I don't think that it's going to work. But if you just want awkward stories to laugh on about and relate to, this is your pick. 



What I want you to know: Dying is easy. Comedy is hard. Clinical depression is no fucking picnic.



One other thing, I would suggest anyone trying to read her books for the first tie, GO IN ORDER. there are some things mentioned here from her last book (which I did not read before this) and I didn't quite understand those references. 




  CWs for the book: This whole book is a TW for all of the health issues Jenny has(mentioned earlier) and a lot of dead animals here and there, keep that in mind before going into it.

This book made me laugh out loud more Times than i can count! It made me feel less useless and less alone! I cried hard at some point and i nodded so much to some sections i actually got a headache (not even kidding!!) 

This book was exactly what i needed to read, and if i could, i would go back in time and give this book to the 12 year old me and told her that im happy she Didnt succeded with her first suicide attempt cause the world have so much more to give! (Well of course in happy i Didnt succeded with Any of My attempts!) 

The only reason im not giving this 5owls is because sometimes i felt it wasnt enough about her mental illness and more about random things! Like a chapter about parsley and soup? Haha, what? I do understand the context and as a whole it was a good book. 

Im not sure people who haven't been struggling with depression and anxiety (and other mental disorders/diagnosis) Will appreciate the book as with someone who is struggling with life. 

But one thing is for sure; Jenny Lawson, you Can make people furiously happy!

I received this book as a part of a Goodreads giveaway - which took me quite a while to get to due to a backlog of books I need to read. This book also came highly recommended to me by my sister, who is by all accounts a big fan of Jenny Lawson. I, on the other hand, had never heard of Jenny Lawson before so I went into this book with entirely fresh eyes, not knowing quite what to expect. This both aided my enjoyment of the book and, in some ways, also hindered it.

The foreword to the book kind of says it all. If you got this book, looking for a self-help example of how to survive mental illness, this isn't the book you're looking for. While it does touch on mental health issues and days where Jenny had bad days regarding said mental health are included in this memoir, this is more a celebration of how she interprets the world around her, how she thinks, and how it affects her while she's out living her life. I have to say, I kind of expected more about the bad days than I got, but that would have to be a massive downer to write about all the time. 

And it's funny. It really is funny. While there were only a couple of spots where I out and out cackled aloud - my favorite story is the Japanese hotel break in - the author's writing style is wild. Most of the time it's an experience just to read the words. I will say that after a while, it does get to be a bit overwhelming and it makes you almost wonder if it's not always genuine. But - and let's be real here - we consume this book at a pace that the author couldn't have dared to write it. An entry that might take a week to write and edit and tweak to fit that voice, we read in fifteen minutes. So, to those that complain that the writing style is put on, that's what I have to say to you. Is it a little overdramatic sometimes? Absolutely! But that's also part of her writing style's charm.

Would I recommend this book to others? Sure! I would say this is aimed at adult readers, but I feel like a mature teen could also handle this book, no sweat. It's funny and definitely enjoyable. While I don't know that it's something I'll reread over and over again, it's definitely one I can safely say I think other people will enjoy.

Furiously Happy is the second book from internet famous blogger, "The Bloggess". This is my first exposure to her work, and I found it delightfully funny! I laughed myself to pieces at parts. However, she flirts with seriousness a few times, and I think if she stuck to the actual themes she set up rather than just give readers what feels like a random set of extended posts, the book would be stronger. Her jokes are hilarious, but I think she could easily do more if she pushed herself to stay on topic and dig a bit deeper.

Warning: if you're the partner of someone with a mental health diagnosis, this book may leave you feeling pretty awful. Admittedly I only made it 40 pages in but had to stop because of how she portrays the folks in her inner care circle (husband, mom). Presented almost exclusively as burdens to her otherwise quirky* existence, she seems quite satisfied (maybe proud?) with sending zero love and care back to them. Not a world I care to be a part of. Not a world I care to venture to. Byeeee!

*quirky being a curated "bests" list of late night musings recorded on her phone when she can't sleep. Isn't that what tumblr is for?? Or quirky also being INTERMITTENT and expected caps LOCK to keep you ON your toES. Much WRITER.

This book is for the “others.” And you very may well be thinking just that for several chapters, until you slowly realize that it’s for you, too. And then you’ll have to really pause and wonder if that means that it’s for you because it’s not actually for the “others,” or if it’s for you because you are exactly one of them and you’ve just been waiting for a voice like Jenny Lawson to tell you that she’s cool with you being a little crazy - hey, she is too! And then you’ll have to reassess whether you think taxidermied raccoons and vagina voodoo dolls really are weird or if you kind of get what makes them so awesome, and then you’ll just get all stabby and yelly, and then you’ll just realize that Jenny Lawson is the best ever and you’re crazy but you’re not alone and you have no idea who that guarded delusional person was who started reading this book when you thought it had nothing to do with things you care about! 

Sincerely, it’s probably easy to read this book and decide that you can’t relate. But if you’ve ever felt like you’re a prisoner of your own mind, or sad and then ashamed that you’re sad and then angry that you even have to be ashamed that you’re sad in the first place, or you just feel like you’ll never be good enough, keep reading. 

Jenny Lawson writes candidly, deeply, and unapologetically (and so god damn humorously) about what life is like when you love day-to-day with an invisible illness that chooses to battle you in the harshest and often most cunning of ways. I shifted uncomfortably and put my scabby cuticles and thumbs into a first when Jenny Lawson talked about scratching her head until she bled, and I literally put down the book to start re-reviewing my calendar for next week when she talked about feeling like a failure on the days when she only has enough in her to get out of bed and to pick between doing the laundry or working out because - dammit - there just aren’t enough spoons for some people. My hair stood up on my arms when she said that she’s just dandy on airplanes and speaking in front of thousands when the thought of either petrified so many, but deciding how to get from the house to the store can send her into a panic of all the things that might go wrong in between. And I full-on cried (just something in both my eyes!) when she reflected on the idea that, just maybe, those of us who have been really far down in the darkness can drink in and be dazzled by the sunshine so much more deeply than those who have lived their whole lives in it. And by the way, who are those people anyway?

There are some chapters that are certainly harder for me than others - Lawson’s writing in some stories is so laid back and stream-of-consciousness that it’s hard to synthesize it all - but welcome to her brain and her point of view. I came to love it all by the end.

These stories are best served warm in the sunshine with a glass of wine in hand and someone (slash cat, dog, stuffed taxidermy pal) nearby to look and be glad to have in your life - and a preparedness to have your guarded, shiny old heart pride open just a little - that, or just exploded apart - by the end.

You guys. This book was exactly what I needed to hear. 
“Pretend you’re good at it.” is my new mantra.

I needed to take a minute to sleep on how to review this one, because I was a ball of emotions after reading it. If you are following my reviews, yes, I am reading this backwards. Reading publications backwards is so great because you know where they are, and get to see where they grew from as a person and a writing. 

Anyway. Last night while I was pondering over what to write as a review we were watching tv, and it was like 2:30 in the morning. Nicholi wanted to switch from Frasier and we couldn't decide what to switch to, and I was like we need a show that puts you to sleep. And he was unamused. But I was like we could put it in the corner, take it out when it's time for bed. Which just confused him more. So I added, it needs to be scared. Which caused me to laugh uncontrollably as I tried to tell him, that it needed to be scared because when we pull it out of the corner it knows you're going to fall asleep in it, so it needs to try it's best to keep you away because no show wants to be someone's fall asleep while watching it. But I don't think he understood because I was laughing so hard and he gave me the annoyed sigh, and said something about wasting five minutes. In that moment I realized that I am furiously happy. 

Even when my depression and anxiety have taken over my mind completely and I am doing my best to not show everyone that I am falling apart, I have figured out the few random things that make me laugh hysterically. And I can be in that moment in spite of my demons trying to tell me that I'm not worthy of that single moment of happiness. 

Us: 2, demons: -1. Because they should get points taken away when they try and "wreak havoc in our minds", not given to them.

This book hit me harder than Broken, and I think it's because this one is more focused on her struggles with depression and anxiety. For the first time, it really felt like someone understood what living with anxiety is like. I cried so much more while reading this once, just for the fact of being validated in my struggles. The way she can put mental illness into words that others can understand is awe-inspiring.

You will love this book if you love her blog. If you are a weirdo. If you suffer from depression or/and anxiety. If you need to escape into someone else's life for a bit? Whatever sinks, your submarine, I'm not hear to judge.

I wanted to like Furiously Happy but it just didn't sit with me the way it seems to with other people. I thought there would be a lot more talk of mental illness and overcoming it but the only chapters that really touched on that and sat with me were "We're Better Than Galileo. Because He's Dead", "It Might Be Easier. But It Wouldn't Be Better.", and the epilogue. 

Lawson's humor just didn't make me laugh. It seemed like a lot of rambling and I was usually left more confused than amused. Her stories seem so exaggerated, I didn't know what I could believe and what was just a lot of silliness. 

When she talks about mental illness - and I mean really talks about it, not using humor as a guise to cope with illness - it's raw and honest and actually touching. It just didn't happen often enough for me. I thought there would be a lot more genuine conversation about de-stigmatizing mental illness and breaking barriers but I guess I thought I was signing up for something different.

Hahah - still a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read.
