Horrorstör

this is killing me. anyone that’s ever worked in retail/customer service knows this one.

A flat-screen TV hanging in the corner displayed a soundless CNN broadcast. On it, a bunch of prisoners in orange overalls were being marched in a circle around a concrete exercise yard. Amy knew the feeling.

this book has taken a darker-than-expected turn. but it fits with amy’s character and i definitely sympathize with her state of mind here. the chance to be free, not self-imposed and extremely traumatic, but the choice to embrace death anyways… followed by the sadness of that choice being taken away by someone she doesn’t like…

He was crouched behind her chair, foolishly trying to rescue her from what she had already embraced. Taking away what she truly wanted just when she had finally found it. Pretending that she could get out of her chair. Telling her lies.

“Everyone keeps telling me it’s all over, that it’s back to normal, but I don’t want to go back to normal. I don’t like the person I used to be. I want to keep being the person I was that night.”

A concept born out of nightmares of small children in large stores, this book had humor and horror. The ending was rushed and could have teased out more plot and characterization to either show development or the lack of an arc.

incredibly cool concept, from the story itself (haunted knock off ikea) to the layout and design of the book, it made it so immersive and “fun” if you call a horror/ghost story fun. the build up was semi slow and quite subtle to begin with but i really really enjoyed not knowing when the creepiness was setting in or whether it was just normal retail hell - overall just the right amount of creepy and a really entertaining read!

I will start this review by saying that I’m not a Horror reader at all; In fact, it’s a genre that I don’t read a lot off mostly because I normally jump at anything and then find it unsettling to calm myself down afterwards; but when a Friend Gifted me Horrorstör I knew that I needed to give it a go and It is a really intriguing.

Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring bookshelves, shattered Glans water goblets, and smashed Liripip wardrobes. Sales are down, security cameras reveal nothing, and store managers are panicking. To unravel the mystery, three employees volunteer to work a nine-hour dusk-till-dawn shift. In the dead of the night, they’ll patrol the empty showroom floor, investigate strange sights and sounds, and encounter horrors that defy the imagination.

This book / catalogue is an incredibly unique layout that is made to look like a furniture store catalogue, complete with diagrams of the available furniture, and write-ups about the functions, colours available, and positive ways each item could be utilized in your home and that really draws you into the book and the experience that it is reading this. I loved how the Pictures and furniture came to life within the chapter and then subsequent chapters it really helps to bring this book to life and almost makes me scared to go back to Ikea!

I loved the growth of the characters throughout the book, and I enjoyed seeing how Amy was like-warm towards Basil; the department stoor manager. , Grady Hendrix was able to transform these characters, through their ordeal, into people that I was genuinely drawn to by the end of the novel. In fact, I was actually disappointed when I reached the conclusion, simply because I wasn't ready to part with them.

I'll never look at Ikea the same way again!

I honestly don't know the point of this, and I can't really say that there was one. All I know is, I'm glad it wasn't too long because I was so bored I just wanted to get through it as quickly as possible!

I’ve been seeing this all over bookstagram for some time now and when I saw that like 90% of this author’s work is free on audible, I decided to give it a shot.

This is a quick listen, so therefore I’m going to assume it would be a real quick read too. For me this would be best labeled as a comedy-horror. It’s not very serious, the copycat IKEA setting is pretty funny, and the writing itself isn’t really anything to write home about. But again, this one is kind of silly in its entirety.

It still has some good spots, and the horror is still present for sure. I especially enjoyed the chapter headers being done by another person and how they get progressively more unhinged. Both performances are good!

Personally a 3.5/5* for me.

A scathing commentary on late-stage capitalism under the guise of a ghost story, set in a knock-off Ikea. What's not to love?

Focusing on a core group of five characters trapped within this store we get a fast paced tale that doesn’t take itself too seriously and knows what it’s meant to be and doesn’t try to be anything it isn’t.

What is it?

Good old fashioned popcorn slasher movie fun.

The perfect type of book to sneak in between longer books you may be working through that seems tailor made to leave you smiling by the end, even in the face of the actual horrors taking place in the story.

While it’s not going to blow anyone away as a literary masterpiece, it also doesn’t try or need to. If you grew up loving classic horror/slasher films from the 90’s such as Scream or Final Destination, then you’re going to have fun with this one. It makes me want to explore more of Grady Hendrix’s work going forward as he’s quickly edging closer to being an “auto-buy” author for me.

It’s comfort food for the horror lovers soul, a refreshing and light-hearted blast of terror that will leave you smiling long after the last pages.

** spoiler alert **
The book is a bit of a Poltergeist-style retread, with the location being an Ikea-like store built over the site of an old prison rather than a house over an Indian cemetery. It's pretty much exactly what you'd expect from a story like that. It was ok, not great. The main narrator on the audio version I listened to was just ok.

On the plus side: it's short.

Such a brilliant format and creepy horror - I'll never look at Ikea the same way again!

I love the concept & design of this book. This book is a parody of an "Ikea" catalog, and plays between the line of horror and humor.

This was a very fast paced and easy read. The overall story is funny and spooky, definitely an interesting plot. I like how the book was also styled between a mix of employee handbook and sales catalog, the little touches really add a little extra something to the book in my opinion. Im definitely interested in reading more from this author.

This was a fun and quick read, but I didn't enjoy it as much as other Hendix books.

A short yet interesting read. Read like an informational catalog at first and then slowly loomed with darkness. It was different but I liked jt.

This was such a fun read. I wasn’t expecting much for actual plot past spooky Ikea, but it had a story that held my interest. I liked the main characters, Amy and Basil, I just wish we got to know them more. Same for all the side characters as well. Grady Hendrix is a safe bet for a fun twist on a familiar genre or setting.

This was good, action packed and crazy. I finished it in 2 sittings. The premise was fun and it just makes me want to read the rest of Grady Hendrix’s books!
