Northanger Abbey is a coming-of-age novel and a satire of Gothic novels written by Jane Austen. It was completed in 1803, the first of Austen's novels completed in full, but was published posthumously in 1817 with Persuasion.

No one who seen Catherine Morland in her infancy would have ever imagined that she was born to be a heroine. 

No one stared at her with rapturous wonder, no eager whispers happened, and neither was she termed a divinity. But she was looked at and admired, and two gentlemnen called her a pretty girl. Catherine found the evening pleasanter immediately, and her humble vanity was satisfied.

If Catherine would have been more experienced in judging other people's feelings, instead of being engrossed in her own, she might have noticed that her brother thought her friend was very pretty.

John perceived her to be the most charming girl in the world. Had Catherine been older, perhaps she would not have been affected by these sort ofcompliments. But when timidity and youth are united, it needs uncharacteristic steadiness of reason to resist the attraction of being addressed as the most charming gil in the world.

We have entered into a contract of mutual agreeableness for an evening. I think the country-dance is an emblem of marriage.
