The final scene, my husband's favorite of all the books and one he was eagerly awaiting me to hit, didn't wow me like it did him. Again I was finishing this book while in that post reading binge daze of the CYBILS. To me the ending was a bit like Dresden taking something from Dr Animo's play book (see "Washington BC" from Season 1 of Ben 10).

This has been by far my favorite Dresden Files book. It has everything you would want in one and Butcher unashamedly embraces what makes these books great with Dead Beat. It's been a pleasure watching the character development of where we see Harry Dresden from the first book to where he is at the end of Dead Beat and where I suspect he is going. 

If you are looking for a fun fantasy series to read then look no further.

That's where Harry comes in. Luckily, however, he's not alone. It's down to Karrin that Harry sneaks into Graceland Cemetery to meet a vampire named Mavra. Mavra has evidence that would destroy Karrin's career, and her demands are simple. She wants the Word of Kemmler - and all the power that comes with it. But first, Harry's keen to know what he'd be handing over. Before long he's racing against time, and six necromancers, to get the Word. And to prevent a Halloween that would truly wake the dead. Magic - it can get a guy killed.

I was going to make fun of this book. I mean if Dresden was going to mention one more time how his Neanderthalian instincts make him pound his chest when woman is in danger *gasp*, or how a pair of bewbs distract him from mortal danger *nobody got time for that*, the library book might have ended up being flung from the nearest cliff, even if that meant very expensive late fees. But then Dino-zombie comes in and totally makes the story awesome again! What are you doing, Butcher?! Your Dino-zombie might have foiled my plans once again, but we have at least eight more books to settle this. No pressure.

This book is full of humour and it builds up on the cheeky attitude of the main character. Interesting new sidekicks join the Dresdenverse.

It feels slightly lighter than previous work on the saga.

James Marsters performance of the audiobook makes it even more enjoyable.

DNF’d this 2 years ago after swearing off this series. Picked it back up on a whim and rather enjoyed it. I think I was burnt out on it before. Regardless, I plan on continuing now.

I always enjoy the Dresden Files books, and the series only gets better with each installment. These are like comfort food for me, so it’s nice to have another one to read now and then. I’ve definitely been taking my sweet time reading them, but they’re also fairly self-contained, so it’s not like I’m getting only part of a story. This installment introduces some new characters and puts Harry on a collision course with the wardens. He also rides a resurrected dinosaur to fight evil wizards, so it’s got a lot going for it.

I'm giving Dead Beat five stars for excellent use of necromancy on a T-Rex on the streets of Chicago. Rock the house, yo!! Nothing beats Sue the T-Rex stomping around in modern day Chicago with Harry riding on her back. Saddle up, Harry!

And the best supporting character award goes to Waldo Butters. Polka will never die!

Man, poor Harry. I think life gets rougher for him in each Dresden Files installment. He’s been burned, shot, blackmailed, and hideously tortured in a multitude of ways. And yet he somehow always makes it through. While I really like him, I still don’t love him quite as much as I do Mercy Thompson and Atticus O’Sullivan, my two favorite protagonists of the Urban Fantasy genre. But he’s definitely winning me over. Also, I don’t see Mouse ever usurping Oberon as my favorite fictional hound, but I already love him, as well. 

The plot here is almost convoluted, but Butcher was able to ride the line there and set up a story that was propulsive and engaging instead. Necromancers and dinosaurs and fallen angels, oh my! There was a lot going on here, things from past installments coming back to rear their heads. And undoubtedly a bunch of the stuff that went down in this book will be coming back to the forefront in future books, as well. One of the things I love most about UF as a genre is how the series tend to be both episodic and something that builds over time. It’s a fun balance.

Okay, so I don't have much to say except that this installment was, no surprise, awesome.

But I'm pretty sure the little blurbs here on GR don't really do the series justice.

I'll be picking up the next one in a book or two.
