I'm 50/50 on this one. I felt that they were in life phases that we're too different for me to fully root for them to get together, but I also didn't like that it basically ended with them more or less casually being together from a great distance.

One Night on the Island: 2.5/5

This book fully encompasses mid-tier. I was fully in love with One Day in December so I had to pick this up. 

If you're looking for a rom-com, this is not it. One Night on the Island is about two people who decide to give a snapshot of their lives to each other. It's definitely more of a slice-of-life book rather than a romance.

One of my main issues with the book is that all the character development happens so suddenly. Every change in character happens on a specific line instead of gradually building up to a change in heart. For example, the two main characters seemingly go from hating each other to loving in one page with little to no development in between. This goes for every character in the book.

Overall, this was not for me and not my preferred romance. If you like slice-of-life books this could 100% be for you.

OMG!! This book was everything. I will say the reviews on here that said it was a slow start aren't wrong. I was sort of lost/confused in the first chapters (I felt that they could have been shorter) but nonetheless this book was just wonderful. It was heartbreaking, and the ending was just wonderful. I love how the author made the book be about this self-love journey; that it's okay to be in love with yourself and be in love with someone else. I didn't go into the book expecting there to be too much romance, but I did stay for the sprinkle of romance that was given to us. For those who gave bad reviews because "They thought it was a rom-com", I found this book in the fiction section of my bookstore not the romance... I enjoyed the writing tremendously. Mack and Celo will have a sliver of my heart (IYKYK) :). 

I will say there was sometimes where I thought the grammar was off and she got the name of character incorrect, but otherwise 5 stars. I will definitely be coming back to this book and reading it again.

I read One Day in December by Josie Silver in November 2021, so when I saw this I was very excited to read it. In my opinion, it is SO much better than ODID!! The writing was amazing and the plot had me hooked from start to finish.

Mack is a photographer who escaped to the island off the coast of Ireland to get away from the messiness of his separation from his ex-wife and to explore his roots. Cleo is a romance columnist aspiring to be a novelist, going to the island to "marry herself" and accept that at 30, she is okay with being single. After a mishap with overlapping bookings - Cleo and Mack end up staying at the same cottage whilst on the island.

This book had me sobbing (what Josie Silver does best) and I'm so happy I got the chance to read it. As well as being a cute romance, this story had a much more powerful impact on self-growth, finding yourself, and dealing with unfortunate situations when you really don't want to.

Josie Silver outdid herself with this book & I would recommend it to anyone!

In the beginning Cleo is a real obnoxious entitled woman that loves to complain, that finds herself in an Irish island and is forced to share a lodge with another island visitor called Mack. After making his his life really uncomfortable and pressure him to leave the island, slowly they start to get to know each other and enjoy each other's company.
She was sent to this remote island to marry herself to show that she doesn't need anyone to validate her, that she is perfectly capable of being happy by herself and to write a piece for a magazine about it. On the other hand Mack is there to connect to his ancestors while he is going through the end of his marriage, and to take pictures for his work. They end up helping each other to evolve and overcome some issues and found a easy but strong connection between them that they think that will end after their stay on the island. But the connection is much stronger than they think and, even though he leaves the island to get to his kids in America, the ocean between them doesn't ease the love they end up feeling for each other. They also end up knowing the people that live on the island and, especially Cloe, develops true friendship with many islanders, making her wonder if this isn't the right place for her instead of loud, confusing and overcrowded London. 
It's a delightful sweet story about love, female empowerment, friendship, self love, and self discovery, beautifully written, that slipped quietly into my soul and got me hooked.
This was my second book by Josie Silver, and I loved this book as much as I loved "The two lives of Lydia Bird".
Just one thing that didn't make sense to me and really baffled me was the book's title, none of them went to spend just one night on the island, so it makes me wonder if I missed something.

I laughed and cried alongside Cleo. She's all over the place, has a heart of gold. It felt like reading my own story, but in a different location, of my story about 7 years ago. The story was messy (in a good way), believable and like a warm hug on a cold & rainy day. 

A truly magical love story, as much about learning to live yourself as falling in love. I loved every second of it, and I'm sad it had to end.

Both characters are well developed and the soul stirring atmosphere of the island comes though loud and clear in this novel.  The romance between the characters takes the lead, however, the plot leans more toward women's fiction than romance.  While the heartbreak in this story feels real, the ending is a bit rushed and doesn't really fit the characters and the lives presented throughout the book.  Even though the novel is a romance, the conclusion doesn't really go along the rest of the story.  Overall, One Night on the Island is a heart-rending romance filled with poignant moments and realistic characters.

I enjoyed this book but it was missing something for me. The romance didn't do a lot and I felt like we didn't get a good enough glimpse into their actual feelings for each other. Also the ending was super weird and I didn't like it.

An escape, but also a serious reflection on living & growing older & the meaning of home/family. So so good

I want to start this review by saying that I have an issue with characters that are emotionally immature. Clear as day, this book starts by saying that the female lead is about to be 30 years old, and still she behaves as if she still was 21. I had trouble getting past that. Luckily, Josie Silver’s beautiful writing style came through, as always, and saved my day. There was something compelling me to continue reading, and I am so glad I did. 

Let’s talk about the bravery of leaving your comfort zone and accepting an assignment far from home, to a place you’ve never even heard of, and having to stay there for a prolonged time… to some of us that can sound like heaven. Leaving all responsibilities behind and just focusing on one simple thing. For other people that is terrifying as hell. And with a good cause. 

Cleo embarks on this journey with an open mind. Trying to make the best of it since this wasn’t even her idea. Her boss is to blame. She gets to a secluded lodge and finds out that the guy that (to her was super rude) is also staying in the lodge because of family connections. Talk about an inconvenience. There are no more boats coming since the weather is horrible and it’s obviously not safe for anyone, so they have no other choice than to coexist with each other and survive the week that takes the boat to come back and no one else on the island has room for them.

You see where this is going… *smirks*

The tension in that lodge is palpable. So thick you can cut it with a knife. Stubborn as hell, they are determined to be the LAST MAN STANDING. Someone needs to go and they are sure that it will not be them. What do you do when there is nowhere to go, thanks to the bad weather, you are in a secluded spot with someone you don’t even know? Exactly, you get to know them. You learn their quirks and rhythm. 

Once they’re past the passive-aggressiveness, the animosity, and the pettiness, they actually start developing some kind of relationships and understanding with each other. They evolve. They help each other grow. Let me clarify that the boat doesn’t come for them. So, they have more than enough time. It speaks volumes how the community embraced them as if they had always been part of the island. They made them feel like family. 

Everyone had such a good relationship with each other. It was absolutely wonderful being able to read such a beautiful description of everyone and everything. It made me want to be there too. Silver states that this island she beautifully describes is a figment of her imagination. Ladies and gentlemen, I declare that I want to live inside her head. 

This book brought tears to my eyes. Tears of sadness and tears of joy. I adored this book and what bothered me at the beginning, seemed meaningless at the end when I saw the person Cleo became. 

Take a chance on this book, for goodness sake.

Forced proximity is one of my favourite romance tropes. So I really enjoyed this romantic tale of Mack and Cleo who are forced to stay in a little cottage on a remote island together. They, of course, hate each other at first but end up softening towards one another. Classic enemies to lovers. This was such a sweet romance. And I loved reading about the cast of characters on the island. Such an easy and lovely read.

To me, the love story portion of the book was a bit cringe. It was sweet but I personally didn't develop a strong connection to their romance.
