This play is pre-Asimov and is the first time the word "robot" was ever used, so that's its big claim to fame. In short, the play is about mass produced robots eventually rising up in revolt.

There are interesting philosophical thoughts to ponder over, and I thought the religious symbolism in the play was compelling. Some things about the book haven't aged well, such as interactions between opposite genders, but of course, it was a different time period back then.

It's a quick read (less than 100 pages for the version I have). Mary Shelley's Frankenstein definitely had an influence on his writing. I'm a big sci-fi fan, so it was a must-read for me. The plot was engaging. I recommend giving it a read.

Slavná antiutopická divadelní hra Karla Čapka z roku 1920, ve které poprvé zaznělo slovo robot, náleží do žánru sci-fi. Ústředním tématem je zkáza lidstva skrze příliš vyspělou techniku, která se vymkla kontrole. Aby se lidé zbavili nutnosti pracovat, stvoří si umělé sluhy–roboty, kteří se však vzbouří a lidstvo vyhladí. Nakonec ale dvojice těchto umělých stvoření, původně neschopná citů, mezi sebou objeví lásku a s požehnáním starého vynálezce se stanou novým Adamem a Evou.

We have Czech writer Karel apek to thank for the invention of the word robot and generally for the introduction of the idea of artificial intelligence to the world of literature. His play, "R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots)" was first performed in 1921 and was an instant success. While the "robots" of the play could be more accurately described as cyborgs, apek's influence on the science fiction genre with this play would be profound. "R.U.R." describes a future where robots have become universal and all of humanity is now dependent on the labor that they provide. Everything is perfect until the robot's are stirred into revolt. "R.U.R." is apek's prophetic and dark dystopian vision of the future which would solidify his place in literary history.
