I didn’t want to confirm a wedding happened because A.) they might want to hold off on a public statement since they most often ignore press, and B.) no one in security has confirmed if it’s real or rumor yet, even if it looks real to me.

Old Donnelly would just pick someone up at the bar. Bring ‘em along. Not caring that they’d likely end the morning crawling out of bed and wishing they hadn’t slept with me.

And then I do. I just don’t want it to be true. Because life is easier if I just move along without considering Luna Hale in everything. I don’t need to be thinking about her. Wondering what she’s doing.

 I’ve never really been friends with a girl. And she’s the first girl that’s just a friend to me, and it’s been fucking me up, honestly.

Salem shuffles side to side, further blocking the staircase. Wasn’t going up there anyway. I’m just waiting down here for—

My face drops with my smile, dread snaking down my spine, and I lift my gaze off Salem and to a different sort of threat.

Loren Hale has emerged from the kitchen, the door swinging shut behind him. Like always, he looks like he wants to annihilate me.

“I’m just waiting for Xander, Mr. Hale.” I take my phone out of my back pocket, and by the twitch of his jaw, I sense Mr. Hale pisses him off about as much as sir.

No one said I’m good with parents, but honestly, I think parents just suck more around me. It’s a them thing. Has to be. ‘Cause I think I’m outstanding. Classy. Well, my type of classy. 

“Did you like it?” I wonder, zipping my backpack closed. I’ve really refrained from asking that question to Charlie. I haven’t wanted the answer. I don’t know what’s changed.

Maybe the fact that I want some positive assurance after seeing all his corrections.

He clicks something on his phone, half-paying attention to me. “It was okay.”

“Lil, turn around. We forgot our kids. We should dump the imposters.” He mimes opening the locked door.

I laugh with Xander. Kinney tries to maintain a cool face, but her lips upturn too.

“They’re all ours, Lo,” our mom says proudly.

I wouldn’t want to be anyone else’s but theirs. 

Dad does a double-take at me, his arm dropping off Mom. “I’m sorry—did Pixie just say she likes evil Cyclops?”

“Luna,” I smile while slurping, sort of biting the straw.

His smile is softer. “Ah, that Luna. I remember.” He turns forward to wipe up hot sauce off his fingers. “She is a good daughter.” He says it like it’s ancient fact from Tatooine. The earnestness in his voice fills my heart tenfold.

“And the best writer,” Mom smiles over at him. She’s always asking which of my fics she should read, and I’ll send her links to some on Fictitious. Like all my family and security, she knows my username, so she could easily find all my stories. Even the smutty ones. But she wants to give me space in case I want to keep my writing private from them, and I appreciate that too.

I love my parents more than humanly possible.

In fact, I add every single person sitting at that table. I compose the text.

I’m not such a stickler for grammar in messages or anything. SB makes them, and I’d never point them out because I’m sure I make some too.

She blushes and waves, then darts towards the motorcycle, arms swinging widely.

My pulse hasn’t slowed, not even as I watch Luna zip away with Tom. I crave to call her back and restart the best parts of tonight. Like there might not be another.

“Girl has my heart,” I tell Farrow. “Or it’s the blood loss.”

“You haven’t lost that much blood.”

He’s fallen for a Hale and still shits in them. Y’know what they say #consistencyiskey.
