I usually feel the need to justify reading chick lit. I know I shouldn't; I can read whatever I like. Sometimes it's nice to sit back and have a little junk food. So I indulge. This book, however, reminded me of why it's a little embarrassing to read chick lit sometimes. There wasn't anything particularly bad about Miss Match. But there wasn't anything particularly good about it either. The whole thing had a generic feel to it. From the rich, too-handsome-for-his-own-good guy to the feisty heroine whose curves and (somewhat generic) wit instantly turn the playboy's head and heart. I was hoping for the sort of chick lit that at least pretends to have a plot and character development. Ok, so maybe that's more like the exotic dancer starting out with a trench coat on, but come on; at least try to imitate effort. Even with all of that, I was still planning on giving it three stars. Until a point towards the end that is. Then the heroine refers to her feelings as "a massive love boner." Yes, that is a direct quote. And with those words, I lost any enjoyment in this book. It would be bad enough for a male character to say that, but for the female lead (particularly since she was quite prim up to that point) to be so uncouth it was completely off-putting. So only two stars for this one.
