J’adore James Salter. What a sensual writer. I think I read something saying what what say about him is that he writes some of the most perfect sentences in the American language and it’s true. 4.5 only cos it’s not Solo Faces, my favourite.

Beautiful writing in this book. James Salter is the master of describing ambience, like the light in the Fall, or walking in the snow with a dog. There is a plot here that involves a married couple, raising children, and both partners end up having affairs with others, but the real value of the book is the beautiful writing. I love the descriptions of New York in the early 1960's; so elegant. 

This is not a page turner like The Hunters, but the writing is perhaps more polished and of course the subject is completely different. But the writing is more beautiful in many ways, if slower.
