M. C. Beaton

When the quarrelsome head of the Dembley Ramblers Association, Jessica Tartinck, turns up dead in the field of the local baronet, the inimitable Agatha Raisin--in another attempt to gain community acceptance--sets out to clear Sir Charles Fraith's name.

Agatha Raisin and the Walkers of Dembley

After six gruelling months spent in London, Agatha Raisin returns to her beloved Cotswold village of Carsely - and to her attractive neighbour, James Lacey. True, James is less than thrilled to see her, but Agatha is soon consoled by a sensational murder. The victim, found in a lonely field, is hiker Jessica Tartinck, who spent her life enraging wealthy landowners by insisting on her walking club's right to hike over their properties. And now she has been found in a cornfield, battered over the head. Agatha lures the reluctant James into helping with her informal investigation, and there are so many leads to follow, for Jessica's fellow walkers seem able, even willing, to commit murder. And then there are the enraged landowners. Hope springs eternal in Agatha's breast, and she feels confident that the trail of a slippery killer may also be the road to love... or will it lead to even more deaths?

Lighthearted story, quite enjoyable. I saw someone saying that the series are like a sitcom, and I totally agree! This is the first one I have ever read, not sure if it was a mistake as there is more backstory until now.

Agatha Raisin and the Walkers of Dembley by M.C. Beaton

I love the Agatha Raisin series and this one is no exception. They're great easy reads with brilliant characters, especially the titular Agatha Raisin. The plots are excellent and I never normally work out who the culprit is.

An unexpected hike to the Other Side . . . After time away, Agatha Raisin returns to her beloved Cotswold village of Carsely - and to her handsome neighbour, James Lacey. True, James seems less than thrilled to see her, but Agatha is soon distracted by a sensational murder. The victim, found in a field, is young hiker Jessica Tartinck, who spent her life enraging landowners by insisting on her right to roam. Hope springs eternal in Agatha's breast as she lures the reluctant James into her investigation. There are so many leads to follow, for Jessica's fellow walkers - not to mention the landowners - all seem able to commit murder. Praise for the Agatha Raisin series: 'M. C. Beaton's imperfect heroine is an absolute gem.' Publishers Weekly 'The detective novels of M. C. Beaton, a master of outrageous black comedy, have reached cult status.' The Times 'Being a cranky, middle-aged female myself, I found Agatha charming!' Amazon customer review 'I dream of being able to speak out like Aggie . . . she's a heroine!' A. A surprisingly uneventful Agatha Raisin mystery! The characters are fairly uninteresting, the plot is weak and even dear old Agatha lacks her usual craziness... This read was a bit of a disappointment but I hear this is one of the least enjoyable installment in the series. I hope Mrs Raisin's next adventures will be more fun to read:)

While the events were enjoyable, I could have done without the "hot tale" on feminism being terrible and feminists being horrible people.
