The latest in the series is back to form after a few lackluster entries.

Another audiobook!

Frankly, I'm glad I haven't purchased many of these novels. I loved the first one and have the second, but this series seems to hate on poor Agatha at every turn. Every love interest needs to have a twist, she can't get a "happy ending" romance to a comical degree. I actually was asking out loud if that's what was really happening. I'm not sure why Beaton thinks this is the way to go, that a highly intelligent woman would really fall for so many people so quickly and then be burned almost every time to varying degrees. She would rinse, repeat, and go back to pitying herself. It got hard to feel sorry for her after a while, since she did this cycle so often in such a short book that I could predict it with every new person she met.

The other odd thing is that Beaton points out her own shortcomings in writing Agatha, that the supporting characters always figure everything out to make variety but Agatha never seems to do real detective work, to a flaw that she ignores blatant warnings. Again, it makes it hard for me to feel bad for her when something happens because she does this so often and she's well old enough to know better.

It was a story I didn't want to stop listening to, and I was entertained by it. I'm sure fans would still enjoy it despite the shortcomings.
