In the book I am currently reading, A Ring of Endless Light (Madeleine L’Engle), the main character, Vicky, wakes up each morning around 6, before the rest of her family. Reading about her doing that reminds me of how it makes me feel--very alive, charmed, perfectly at peace, and somehow in touch with magic. I am adoring the book, and relating to the main character very, very much. The book takes place on an island over the course of a summer, and everything about it touches my Florida/beach/sparkling ocean/imaginative/creative alignment. It is a sad book, in some ways, and very much about death, but of course very much about life as well. It’s kind of the perfect book, for me, in some ways, right now, and I am so grateful to have rediscovered it. I don’t know if I’ve read it before, I have no real memory of it but it sounds familiar, so perhaps I just read the inside cover back when I was obsessed with Madeleine L’Engle. I know I read The Arm of the Starfish, which I now want to read next. I am on a kick of re-reading all of my favorite and most beloved book series from my childhood; it’s the kind of soul-restorative work that keeps me most grounded these days.
