This book was great. The prose is beautiful and the characters are real and have you rooting for some, angry at others, and ache for others. The story is full of hope and heartache and forgiveness and love.

Rarely do I ever not finish a book, but I just couldn't do it. I bought this book four years ago, because the synopsis on the back sounds absolutely adorable and sweet. Well I started it when I first bought it, but gave up on it (the bookmark is actually still in there); I thought I would try to read it again, being older, I figured maybe I'd like it better. NOT! The book is jumpy and confusing. I'm not sure if it is the writing or the development that I dislike, but it just didn't flow. Using classic movies to describe things can be cute to a point, but for people who aren't as obsessed with that era of movies, well the references just don't make sense. I love the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's, so if someone mentions Audrey Hepburn I get the image, but the references went way too in depth to the point where I was utterly lost. It changed perspectives between the the little girl and adult women, and I love books that change perspectives, but when it was in Cornelia's she spoke like she was talking to a friend, which isn't terrible, but like I said previously just jumpy and way too many classic movie references. When it was Clare's, she just over-described everything. I really didn't like the book, because I just couldn't picture it in my head. The neighborhood, the people... I just couldn't follow the story. I definitely wouldn't recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book. The author has a very elegant style of writing. It's sort of like eating a very elegant but sinful dessert. She paints her characters very vividly so that they come to life on the page. Cornelia is a very smart sort of artsy person who has pretty much put really owning her life on hold. Clare is a very smart little girl in survival mode. The contrast between the stories they are telling really held my interest. I get the feeling there was some ruthless editing involved here, because things seem to happen very fast, A lot happens in what appears to be less than a month, and some of the transitions are a little abrupt.[return][return]I was not able to get a good feeling for who these people were before they leaped out of the page at me, but they were certainly well fleshed out once they arrived. It was a wonderful read, however, and I look forward to more books by this author.

I found this book randomly at a second hand store, and picked it up because I thought the cover was nice. Little did I know I would be reading such a thoughtful, smart, poignant story of love and belonging. I enjoy the way the fiction is written at times in a memoir style where the author talks directly to the audience.

The story of the abandoned girl who finds her kindred spirit in the diminutive coffee shop manager will stay with me. Also, for audio book lovers, my local library has it in the "always available" category.
