I write reviews for a couple of reason: first as a way to show my respect for authors (like Catherine Leroux, whose book I just finished - L'Avenir and its translation The Future) who had obviously put a lot of time and effort (her poor abandoned children!) into crafting a complex story like L'Avenir), and even for the translator (Susan Ouriou), as a way to honor her hard work to translate a book faithful to the author's intent; and if the book is worthy, I like to spend some time thinking about what the author was trying to do and how the book impacted me. I'm a computer nerd so spent much of my time reading technical manuals (and raising a family) and about fifteen years ago I felt the need to start reading fiction. I occasionally branch out to non-fiction but my focus is on fiction. I certainly don't read as much as I should but I tend to read deep and very, very slowly :( . I enjoy reading other people's thoughts, generally after I have read a book and always look forward to recommendations. I tend not to read current fiction but make exceptions. In posting a review of a book I hope to have achieved something reasonably readable with a tone that may come across as reasonably thoughtful, or at least respectful, and perhaps (at least in my eyes) lightly humorous (I’m Canadian by way of a British father and a Newfoundland mother), and I can only hope of never being knowingly pedantic, pompous or artsy. One of my daughters surprised me when taking the photo of me (reading) some years ago and it became my favourite. Love never grows old. Edwin
