Marissa Meyer

A #1 New York Times Bestselling AuthorLong before she was the terror of Wonderland ― the infamous Queen of Hearts ― she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love. Heartless

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland and a favorite of the unmarried King, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, she wants to open a shop and create delectable pastries. But for her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for a woman who could be a queen. At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the King's marriage proposal, she meets handsome and mysterious Jest. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into a secret courtship. Cath is determined to choose her own destiny. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

This standalone is a Queen of Hearts origin story. Where the King of Hearts courts a lady named Catherine. But she doesn’t want to be Queen she just wants to open a bakery. She falls in love with the court joker but everything doesn’t go the way she hopes it does. Leaving her heartless.

This was heartbreaking mostly because you know she isn’t going to have the bakery, or the life with Jest and Mary Ann. Just when all was hopeful in the book I reminded myself that this is her backstory and that with the way she turned out, I’m not surprised after reading this.

Cathrine was loveable at the start, love of baking and as the blurb says, she fell in love for the first time with Jest. The author did amazing job of showing her descent into madness after Jest’s death. We also see that after her heart is taken, she quite obviously really changes.

I loved this book, I read my sisters copy but I will be buying my own version to put on my bookshelf because this book really had my heart 💗

Love you Jest you didn’t deserve that ❤️🕊️

I’ll tell you who’s heartless, it’s Marissa Meyer!!!!

This book was so good and so sad at the same time. I LOVE reading villain origin stories and dare I say I’d be a villain too if this happened to me.
