Days of Light, is an intimate tale that chronicles six pivotal days across six decades from the Second World War through the twentieth century. 

We first meet Ivy on Easter Sunday in 1938 when she is 19, and her sprawling bohemian family await friends at their idyllic Sussex home as they host an Easter lunch. Britain is on the cusp of war, but Ivy feels her life is on the cusp of something beautiful in this auspicious springtime atmosphere. That is, until tragedy strikes, which alters the rest of her life. We then revisit her in 1944, 1956, 1965, and 1999, following her life’s highs and lows as she searches for answers to the events of the fateful Easter of 1938. 

Days of Light is a deeply personal and philosophical tale that explores love and grief as we immerse ourselves in Ivy’s life. Hunter’s writing is delicate, intricate, and reflective as we see Ivy change and grow through explorations of motherhood, religion, and spirituality, as well as the developing society around her. It is a character-driven coming-of-age novel structured through an evocative literary prose as the female protagonist searches for the light in her life, both literally and figuratively.

This book does not have any speech marks, which I hate in books, but I did become used to the speech being italicised. There were points where I did feel it became a little mundane, but if you enjoy character-driven novels, this one might be for you!
