Nostalgia A Novel
A translation of the leading Romanian writer's 1989 debut novel consists of five stand-alone chapters that are linked together through imaginative explorations of such themes as humankind's primordial myth-making, the origins of the universe, and an apocalyptic Bucharest tenement district during the years of communist dictatorship. I couldn't manage it, and, if by some absurd turn we begin again our love story, it would end the same way. I prefer to be next to her in poems, in dreams, in memories, where her image is aesthetic and inoffensive. If I thought there was another chance that she could love me, I would take it, but it is absurd. It is true, though, that without her I am nothing.

She looked deep into my eyes, as though her life depended on what she had to tell me.I was trying to help her, to understand her, I emptied my brain to make room for her to get inside. I knew there was nothing to hope for, because she was a woman and consequently I would never be able to understand her.
