Biographical Memoirs

Excerpt from Biographical Memoirs, Vol. 1 According to the rules of the National Academy of Sciences it is the duty of the President, upon the death of any member, to provide for the preparation of a biographical memoir of the deceased, by appointing some member to perform that duty, such memoir being subsequently read at a regular session of the Academy. By direction of the Academy the Home Secretary has collected the memoirs that have been so prepared to the close of 1876, and has published them in the present volume. Others will be printed from time to time, as they are delivered, and will ultimately be combined into similar volumes.
