Nevernight Nevernight #1
Reviews

Really liked this book. The writing style that everyone complains of didn’t really bother me. I felt as if the book was better at the beginning and kept getting more boring and generic at the end. I loved the interactions that Mia and Tric had. Anyway, looking forward to the rest of the series.

thank you jay kristoff no thank you maria

At first I could not get into this book. I didn't understand what was going on or what exactly the book was about. The biggest action in the book was towards the end. Most of the plot was of the students training and going to class and Mia making friends and enemies. It was hard to remember Mia is only 16. I also didn't love her "relationship" with Tric because it didn't feel like it had any build to it. Suddenly she is just sneaking into his room and getting steamy, but I did really like Tric's character and background. I liked most of the characters, tbh. There is not one character that I felt did not have a worthwhile part to play. The footnotes are mostly really funny and worth interrupting the flow of the story since they explain a lot of events and stories of the world. It really helps root the idea that this world has existed for a immense amount of time and we are just peeking in to one person's tale. Although it took some time to get into, by page 100 (or so) I was really invested and falling in love with Mia and her story.

“The books we love, they love us back. And just as we mark our places in the pages, those pages leave their mark on us. I can see it in you, sure as I see it in me. You’re daughter of words. A girl with a story to tell” I’m not sure there are enough words to deceive the depth of my amazement with this book. I know their aren’t enough words to describe all the emotions it threw at me. To put it simple, Jay Kristoff is like nothing and no one else and his ability to tell a story is something no words can describe.

Nevernight is an absolutely fantastic and captivating story of a young girl training to be an assassin and find who she is. This story was absolutely captivating and I could not put down the book for even a second. Jay Kristoff’s writing is the gold standard, which makes it nearly impossible to put down the book from the first sentence to the last. I can’t believe it took me this long to pick it up, but I cannot wait to devour the next two in the trilogy!

In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family. Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father's failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father's former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined. Now, a sixteen year old Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic: the Red Church. Treachery and trials await her with the Church's halls, and to fail is to die. But if she survives to initiation, Mia will be inducted among the chosen of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the only thing she desires. Revenge. Content warning for torture, violence and graphic gore. The writing was incredibly hard to digest at first. The footnotes were distracting, and I recommend the audiobooks over the physical copies, as it does a good job at making the footnotes sound more natural as part of the story. Jay Kristoff does a great job at crafting an interesting world, but the tone and atmosphere of the story was reminiscent of what I would imagine an edgy hot-topic employee would dream of. Some of the characterization of female characters were suspect, very clearly written by a man. Once I accepted that the story was written by an edge-lord, the story became compelling. I loved Mia and her talking shadow cat, Mister Kindly. All of the secondary characters were easy to visualize and had distinct personalities that made them compelling. I loved the story structure and the dark adventure at the assassin school. I recommend this book for people who love stories about assassins and for those who enjoy grim dark storytelling.

Highly entertaining first entry to the series. I especially liked how the writing style and metaphors like "She slid into the building like a knife through ribs" (own translation) contribute to the dark eerie theme of the book.

“The brighter the light, the deeper the shadows”
Great book, can’t wait to see how this story develops! Great plot twists, the kind where the hints have been there throughout the book but you only realise it when it all ties together towards the end.

The world building is good but the book was overall pretty uneven with a slow start and plodding sections before finally coming together for a pretty decent ending. Good enough to start the next book and see where it goes.

This book is coming out on my birthday! Update: Eh... Pretty much just confused for like half the book and it's kind of brutal. I don't know, something didn't click right with me. Update: I heard the audiobook is good, so maybe I'll read it like that. xoxo, Bea

Wow!! This was fantastic from start to finish! Excellent plot with twists and revels that I didn't see coming! Great world building and magic system and well thought out characters! Excited to read book two!

This book was INSANE!!! Takes the classic vengeful-assassin-teenager things and flips it entirely on his head. The main character is funny, the writing structure is so engaging just from the first page, and there are many many twists and turns. World building is skillfully integrated and really creative, there's lots to be revealed still. I was gripped from first page to last and read the whole thing in like a day and a half!!! So excited to get the next book for Mia's continued journey.

mia corvere if you're reading this i'm free on thursday night and would like to hang out. please respond to this and then hang out with me on thursday night when i’m free

I desperately want to give 5 stars. But the DETAILED SEX SCENES WITH MINORS hold me back from doing so! An ADULT fantasy book should not have sex scenes featuring a 16 year old girl. It’s so uncomfortable as to bring you out of the otherwise rich, vivid, and engaging world of Itreya.
The story was phenomenal. Mia’s snark and cynicism reminds me of El from A Deadly Education. Mia’s entire story reminds me of Throne of Glass/Assassin’s Blade, but more graphic and gory. The fantasy world and protagonist spunk reminded me of Seven Blades in Black. And the dark temple to a violent deity reminded me of The Jasmine Throne. In essence, this book is a combination of everything I love. I want to read the other books so badly, and I probably will.
But dear god why do we have MULTIPLE sex scenes involving MINORS! It was so unnecessary and I can’t believe that was allowed to be published.

Holy shit...I'm speechless...I had chills as I was finishing the end of this book oh my god. What a ride honestly omg. The writing, the world building, the unique way of telling the story...I'M IN LOVE!! I LOVE MIA SO MUCH AND JUST THIS WHOLE BOOK I JUST HAVE NO WORDS. I HONESTLY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY EXCEPT I NEED EVERYONE TO READ THIS BC ITS BLOODY BEAUTIFUL. I was a little apprehensive at first because there was a lot to get used to, terms, the way it's told, the world...but once I was into it I knew it would be a 5* book for me! I'm really glad I have the 2nd and 3rd books with me right now so I can finish the series hopefully by the end of 2020! ( not even gonna say soon bc my reading is very impulsive and a mess despite how much I wanna devour the next 2 books)

3.5,, this book is good there’s no denying it but why oh why are we getting detailed sex scenes of a 16 year old

I loved this so much, definitely made it onto the favourites shelf. I was honestly hooked from the beginning and I never wanted to put it down. Now to read Godsgrave...

Definitely enjoyed this story. Very compelling world and Jay is great at character development!!

4.5 Re-read: 4/5 stars

4/5 Rating. "Too many books. Too few centuries.”

"You've got the look of a girl who's no stranger to the page. I can tell. You've got words in your soul."

“Iron or glass? they'd asked.
Mia clenched her jaw. Shook her head.
She was neither.
She was steel.

….What exactly do you teach here?"
"The soft touch. The lingering stare. Whispered nothings that mean everything. These are the weapons I shall give you."

"She who is all and nothing,
First and last and always,
A perfect black, a Hungry Dark,
Maid and Mother and Matriarch,
Now, and at the moment of our deaths,
Pray for us."

“You know, I never understood that. How being named after a woman’s nethers is somehow more grievous than any other insult. Seems to me calling someone after a man's privates is worse. I mean, what do you picture when you hear a fellow called a cock?"
Tric shrugged, befuddled at the strange turn in conversation.
“You imagine an oaf, don't you?" Mia continued. "Someone so full of wank there's no room for wits. A slow-minded bastard who struts about full of spunk and piss, completely ignorant of how he looks to others."
An exhalation of clove-sweet gray into the air between them.
"Cock is just another word for fool. But you call someone a cunt, well." The girl smiled. "You're implying a sense of malice there. An intent. Malevolent and self-aware.”
