*A silly twist on the haunted house troupe*

The Canterville Ghost was Oscar Wilde’s irreverent take on Gothic Horror. The title ghost has been haunting his mansion for generations and has amounted quite the reputation for his horrors. But his reign of terror comes to a screeching halt when a pragmatic American family moved into his home. Not only are the Otises completely unfazed by his terrors, they offer the ghost practical remedies and advice: oil for his rattling chains and stain remover for his blood stains.

The story is humorous but not laugh out loud funny. While it was entertaining, it wasn’t my favorite of Wilde’s works. Even with the snarky humor, the overall story needed a little more oomph. The ending was a bit of a copout. Nevertheless, the writing was good.

“Yes, death. Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one's head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no to-morrow. To forget time, to forget life, to be at peace. You can help me. You can open for me the portals of death's house, for love is always with you, and love is stronger than death is.”

It’s short and easy to read. The Canterville Ghost is a good choice if you want something amusing and a little silly.

Honestly when I requested this book from the library I expected a thick tome and was surprised to discover a 40-page story that would take me about half an hour to read from front to back. But I was very entertained and definitely see myself reading it to my children in the future.
