There was something innately bad inside me, because I was willing to do absolutely anything to save my own skin. Whether it was to remain silent under a bed, poison an old woman, or stab another and allow them to be mutilated after death. I did not feel the weight of this yet, and I wondered when and if the gravity of the things I had done would touch me.

Have you noticed that it's only women who curse ourselves with such a stupid ambition? You don't catch men worrying about being perfect. They go about the world making a great hash of things and don't think much of it.

Because of the gentle way she managed my indifference, l felt I deserved my marriage after all.

While the plot of this book centres around “I think my husband is Jack the Ripper”, ‘People of Abandoned Character’ also offers commentary on class and gender. Susannah makes an interesting narrator, and the other characters are well developed as well.

The premise of the book is what drew me in and the writing of the book was really good! The only reason it’s not a five star is because the book didn’t end how I thought it would so I’m someways I guess it didn’t live up to expectations. Would 100% recommend though!
