I first heard about the illustrated edition of this book a couple of months ago, and I was really interested. The story of the Greek gods told according to Percy? With images? Count me in! But the book was quite big and thus expensive - which I had anticipated - so I stalled my purchase. Later on I made peace with the fact that I had to borrow it from my friend (as soon as she'd finished it), but then a couple of days ago I saw the book at a local bookstore. It was the same size as my Heroes of Olympus books (unlike the one my friend owns) and so I decided to buy it.

Like I said, Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods is basically the original mythology stories, told according to Percy. With lots more humour, a bit less gore (because those myths are gory af) and just so so so much humour, gods. That is one of the reasons I love Riordan's books so much, he manages to make me laugh (out loud) with his book and mostly his chapter titles every damned time.

First, Percy explains about how this whole mythology started; with Ouranus and Gaia, and their twelve Titan children. How Kronos killed his father to become the 'king' of the world and how eventually Kronos would have something similar to him happen by the hands of his own children. Karma's a bitch. Then, Percy picks fifteen Gods and Goddesses to gossip talk about, and honestly I loved it so much.

I knew most of these stories already, so it wasn't that exciting to me, but the way Percy/Rick told them were so nice and so hilarious. There were a lot of references to modern things - like cellphones and facebook and Justin Bieber - and it was just so strange and amazing to see those mixed in with those old mythology stories. I really think that choosing to write this book like this was the best idea Rick ever had.

If you want to know more about Greek mythology, but you don't want to read those 'boring' books, I definitely recommend you pick up Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods. But only pick up the edition I have, okay? I'd be insanely jealous if you'd picked up the beautiful illustrated edition (which I might still do soon. I think. I don't know). I'll certainly be picking up the other book 'Percy' has written, named Percy Jackson and the Greek Heroes - talking about all those demigod and mortal heroes like Hercules, Perseus and so on.

Percy Jackson and the Greek Heroes

Actual rating: 4,5*. Just like with Percy Jackson's Greek Gods, this book tells the story of the most well known Greek Heroes as if it was written down by Rick Riordan's most famous character himself. As I enjoyed the previous companion novel so much, I decided I was definitely going to pick up this book as well. So I pre-ordered the paperback that matched my other Riordan books and immediately started it upon receiving it.

In this book you'll read about the most well known Greek Heroes such as Otrera, Atalanta, Bellerophon and Cyrene. And also about a couple of lesser known Heroes such as Perseus, Hercules and Jason, you know - I don't blame you if you don't know these three! ;) (To be honest, those three were the only ones whose names sounder familiar to me, though the stories of the other were familiar too, just not their names).

This book is written as if it were actually written by Percy Jackson (wait, what am I saying, it is written by Percy because he's totally real, right?) and honestly this is what made me enjoy this book and the Greek Gods one so much. Because I already know most of these stories very well (okay a lot of the heroes described in this book were completely new to me, though some of their stories sounded familiar shh), but the way Rick/Percy wrote them were just hilarious, with all kinds of references to modern things such as phones, iTunes and stuff. My favourite part was when Hercules was about to fight the Hydra, I had been anticipating a Captain America or at least a Marvel reference for that - and lo and behold, it was there!


  'It is a Hydra.' 'A what now?' Hercules thought he might have heard that name in a Captain America movie.

I honestly would have loved this book even more if I had gone for the illustrated editions, but they were rather large and more expensive, so I had to go for the mortal editions without pictures, oh well, maybe in the future! This book was entertaining enough without the pictures, though, so I didn't really miss out that much.

Like with the previous book, this is a good way of reading more about the Greek mythologies without having to read all those boring old books that will take you a thousand lifetimes to read. So if you're looking for a way to read about Greek mythology in a fun and easy way, definitely pick up both Percy Jackson's Greek Gods ánd this book, Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes!

This quote alone would have delivered a 5 star rating for me, but even without a Taylor Swift mention, I still LOVED this book.

I was doing this thing where I would read all Rick Riordan books, one a month. That lasted maybe two months before I went completely out of track and now it has been more than a year since the last book of his I read. Let me make this clear it is not due to me not liking the books because they are a delight, but it is due to me being stupid and flaky.

When I finally decided to continue my trip in the Riordanverse with this one, I had to wait 8 weeks in the library queue, but it was all worth it.
It was SO MUCH FUN. I don't remember the God's one be as good as this one. I kept giggling while reading, and I cracked up so many times, which is unusual for me.
Every single sentence is so humorous! The tone is always fun and light, and even if Greek heroes myths are often gruesome or violent, here they were told in such a delightful way.
I can't tell which story I liked best, they were all equally interesting and hilarious.

This really put me in the mood to continue with the main series (the next book for me will be the House of Hades)

Of course, I don’t think I can say whether this book is good or not (because I am clearly not an expert on the subject, I have no parent god and I am not contemporary of the facts), but it seems obvious to me that it is by no means bad. It is a good way to approach mythology, to show its problems and its many absurdities. And it’s interesting (and hilarious at times) because Percy is anything but subjective. So when someone does something stupid, he’s not going to hesitate to point out the stupidity of the act, to talk about female and male heroes (who are almost forgotten in the ancient writings) or to show that when talking about Greek heroes, We rarely deal in the end with the archetype of the hero but rather more often, with a human who saved as killed people.This book is funny and comforting due to its narrator but also enriching by its content and small anecdotes (from where comes this or that word, the etymology of this, if this building still exists, a info on the region, etc) that Percy allows himself to add (well Rick Riordan but you understood). In short, this book was a beautiful experience rich in laughter and information.

Je pense pas pouvoir évidemment dire si ce livre est bon ou pas évidemment mais il me parait évident de souligner qu'il n'est en aucun cas mauvais. C'est une bonne façon d'aborder la mythologie, de montrer ses problèmes et ses nombreuses absurdités. Et c'est intéressant (et hilarant par moments) car Percy est tout sauf objectif. Donc quand quelqu'un fait des bêtises, il ne va pas hésiter à souligner la stupidité de l'acte, à parler de héros féminins autant que masculins (qui sont presque oubliés dans les anciens écrits) ou à montrer qu'en parlant de héros grecs, on n'a rarement affaire au final à l'archétype du héros mais plutôt le plus souvent, à un humain qui a sauvé comme tué des gens. Ce livre est drôle et réconfortant dû à son narrateur mais aussi enrichissant par son contenu et aux petites anecdotes (d'ou vient tel ou tel mot, l'étymologie de ceci, si ce bâtiment existe toujours, une info sur la région, etc) que Percy se permet de rajouter (enfin Rick Riordan mais vous avez compris). En bref, ce livre était une belle expérience riche en rires et en informations.

Percy Jackson is a hilarious narrator and that did all the magic.
Honestly the authenticity to any of the myths are debatable but I'm hoping what I read here is at least 70% genuine. It was funny, relatable because of the way of its narration aaand overly simple to understand.

La mythologie ? Quelle barbe jupitérienne... Sauf si le jeune demi-dieu Percy Jackson se mêle de nous la raconter de l'intérieur. Parce que le garçon est vraiment bien placé pour en parler : son papa, c'est Poséidon, le dieu de la mer, un type pas vraiment commode. Trahisons, complots, vengeances, incestes, cannibalisme, bains de sang, rapts et prises d'otages, des Titans à Hercule en passant par Prométhée, on ne s'ennuie jamais avec les Olympiens !
