This one is hard to rate. On the one hand, I have really strong memories of enjoying this one as a kid, mostly for the wild adventure that was not scary in the least. However, rereading it, the adventure aspect is let down by crappy writing and goofy moments not to mention the absurdity of the entire plot. Though I'll be fair and say that in the context of the series, the plot is not even that unreasonable. Overall: quick, tame adventure story with very few surprises and some sequences that will leave you scratching your head but moving on before the stupidity can sink in. Like I said, I distinctly remember this book as the one where some kid's goldfish blew up to the size of cars and some incredibly convenient dolphins appear. I do like the inclusion of the animals and the setting in the middle of the sea. I can only say this is an extremely average book that may tip slightly above or below average depending on your preference for ocean adventures.

This cover is one of the first I remember from when I was a kid. We used to take shore vacations as a family every year, and sharks were always such a fascinating and scary thing to me. They can be just below you, and you don’t even know!

I honestly didn’t remember the story that much, so I was incredibly surprised with the inclusion of mermaids. I think my brain just stuck with the shark cover and that was about it.

Very enjoyable though, and it was nice to be surprised. The research stuff described, as well as the different marine life on board, definitely had me hooked and wanting more of that background info.

Personally a 5/5* for me. The setting change was a bit hit.

Deep Trouble forgets that Goosebumps is supposed to be about horror and attempts to get into the action/thriller genre without much success. Billy and his sister Sheena are hanging out with their scientist uncle, looking for exotic marine life when they find a mermaid! Scientist uncle wants to take her back to land to research, but he is twarted by other people who also want to profit off the mermaid. They leave Billy and his family sinking in the water, locked into a cage, by other mermaids come to save the trapped trio because they totally should have an interest in saving their sister's captor. Then everyone goes all action hero to save the mermaid from the evil dudes. There are some scary moments with sharks and the book ends with a super creepy beast, but otherwise this feels like a bizarre addition to the Goosebumps canon. Forgettable and odd, of course this is one of the books to get a sequel later in the series... :l

SEQUEL TIME! Sequel time is never a good time in Goosebumps land...

Billy, Sheena, and their scientist uncle (SO MANY SCIENTISTS IN THIS SERIES) are back on the water, and who the hell cares that they discovered mermaids last book. We're going to talk about PLANKTON. For serious. Well, at least until the kids start seeing GIANT fish swimming around. In fact, when Billy's goldfish explode in size, they almost sink the ship! This causes some really bad dudes to come by who have been experimenting on the plankton to grow super large fish to save the world from hunger, but they're evil and don't want people to know because reasons. They are going to kill our protagonists, but they escape thanks to GIANT seagulls and end up on a deserted island until they are rescued by GIANT dolphins. The dolphins bring them back to their ship where the head evil dude is. He reveals that when a human eats the plankton, they turn into a fish. Billy tricks him by drinking some by not changing (but it was totally cause he had an "awesome" prank involving ice tea prepared), so the evil dude drinks some himself, becomes a fish, and YEA THIS BOOK IS FINALLY OVER EXCEPT SHEENA MIGHT BE A FISH I DON'T CARE. Deept Trouble II made no sense, wasn't scary, and completely ignored what happened in book 1. BAD BOOK, GO GET EATEN BY A GIANT CRAB OR SOMETHING!
