1942-ൽ പുറത്തുവന്ന Sándor Márai-യുടെ നോവലാണ് "Embers" ("The Candles Burn Down to the Stump" എന്ന് ഫിന്നിഷിൽ, ഈ പേര് നോവലിന്റെ ആഖ്യാന രീതിയെ സൂചിപ്പിയ്ക്കുന്നതായി കാണാം). പിൽക്കാലത്ത് അമേരിക്കയിലെ കാലിഫോർണിയയിൽ, ഏകാന്തതയിൽ, ആരാലുമറിയപ്പെടാതെ, കാൻസർ ബാധിതനായി ആത്മഹത്യ ചെയ്ത Márai, നാല്പതിലധികം പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ എഴുതിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. നാസികളെ കഠിനമായി വിമർശിച്ചിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് അവരെ തുരത്തി അധികാരത്തിൽ വന്ന റഷ്യക്കാരോടും വലിയ താല്പര്യമില്ലായിരുന്നു - റഷ്യക്കാർ അദ്ദേത്തിന്റെ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ നിരോധിയ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു("Back home, literature has disappeared... the country has collapsed: in its place all that's left is a communist Russian colony."). അമേരിക്കയിൽ എത്തിയ ശേഷം മാതൃഭാഷയിൽ എഴുതപ്പെട്ട അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ മരണശേഷം മാത്രമാണ് പുറത്തുവന്നത്. അപ്പോഴേയ്ക്കും ജന്മനാട്ടിൽ പോലും വിസ്മൃതിയിലാണ്ട് പോയ ഈ കൃതികൾ കഴിഞ്ഞ രണ്ടു ദശാബ്ദങ്ങളിൽ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്, മറ്റു യൂറോപ്പിയൻ ഭാഷകളിൽ എല്ലാം വീണ്ടും കാര്യമായി വായിയ്ക്കപ്പെടാൻ തുടങ്ങി. ഒറ്റവാചകത്തിൽ സൗഹൃദങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള ഏറ്റവും സൂക്ഷ്മ കാഴ്ചയാണ്‌ ഈ നോവൽ എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാൽ തെറ്റില്ല. നോവൽ ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും intense ആയ ഒറ്റയാൾ സംഭാഷണങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് ഈ നോവലിന്റെ ആത്മാവ്. നായകനായ വൃദ്ധകഥാപാത്രത്തിന്റെ പക്വതയേറിയ വിചാരവികാരങ്ങൾ പതിയെ വെളിപ്പെട്ടുന്നുവരുന്നത് കണ്ട് വായനക്കാരൻ അത്ഭുതപ്പെടും. 

ഒരു വനപ്രദേശത്തെ കൊട്ടാരത്തിൽ കഴിയുന്ന ഒരു ജനറൽ തന്റെ സുഹൃത്തിനെ കാത്തിരിയ്ക്കുന്നതായി കാണിച്ചാണ് നോവൽ തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. അച്ഛൻ തന്റെ ദരിദ്ര സുഹൃത്തിനെ എങ്ങനെയാണു സ്വന്തം ചിറകിൻ കീഴിൽ സംരക്ഷിച്ചു വളർത്തിയത് എന്ന് അയാൾ ഓർക്കുന്നു. കണിശക്കാരനായ പട്ടാള ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായിരുന്നു അച്ഛൻ. മകനും അവന്റെ സുഹൃത്തും അതുപോലെ തന്നെ വിജയകരമായ ഔദ്യോഗിക ജീവിതങ്ങൾ നയിയ്ക്കണം എന്ന വാശിക്കാരനായിരുന്നു അയാൾ. എന്നാൽ മകന്റെ സുഹൃത്തിനു പുരുഷസങ്കൽപ്പങ്ങൾക്കു ചേരാത്ത, സംഗീതത്തിലും താൽപ്പര്യമുണ്ടെന്നത് അയാളെ നിരാശനാക്കി. മകനും അതതിശയമുണ്ടാക്കി. എന്നാൽ ഇതവരുടെ സൗഹൃദത്തിന് മങ്ങലേല്പിച്ചില്ല. സുഹൃത്ത് ഒരിയ്ക്കൽ തന്റെ ദരിദ്രമായ സാഹചര്യങ്ങൾ അയാൾക്ക് കാണിച്ചുകൊടുത്തു. അച്ഛനുമമ്മയും അർദ്ധദാരിദ്ര്യത്തിൽ കഴിഞ്ഞാണ് മകന്റെ പഠനവും മറ്റു സൗകര്യങ്ങളും ഒരുക്കിക്കൊടുത്തിരുന്നത്. ഈ സുഹൃത്തുക്കൾ തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധവും പ്രത്യേകതകളുള്ളതായിരുന്നു. ഒരു പ്രായം വരെ തങ്ങളിരുവരും ബ്രഹ്മചര്യം കാത്തുസൂക്ഷിയ്ക്കും എന്നതുപോലെയുള്ള നിയമങ്ങൾ അവർ പാലിച്ചിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ജനറൽ, പാർട്ടികളിലും മറ്റും സമയം കഴിച്ചപ്പോൾ സുഹൃത്ത് സംഗീതത്തിന്റെ ലോകത്തായിരുന്നു.

I do not mean the opportunistic pleasure that two people experience in encountering each other when they think the same way about certain things at certain moments of their lives, when they share the same tasks or the same needs...”. വർഷങ്ങളായുള്ള അന്വേഷണമാണ് ദീർഘമായ കൂടിക്കാഴ്ചയ്‌ക്കൊടുവിൽ അയാൾ അവസാനിപ്പിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. അയാൾക്ക്‌ വേണ്ട ഉത്തരം ലഭിച്ചു എന്നാണ് കഥയിലെ സൂചന. അയാളുടെ ചിന്തകൾ പക്ഷെ വരുന്നത് തന്റെ ബുദ്ധിയുടെയും ജ്ഞാനത്തിന്റെയും വെളിച്ചത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ്. ഒരുപക്ഷേ സുഹൃത്ത് അന്നവിടെയില്ലായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ പോലും അയാളാ ഉത്തരം കണ്ടെത്തുമായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷെ അയാളവിടെയുണ്ടാകുന്നത് വൃദ്ധന് പ്രധാനമായിരുന്നു. ആ അനുഭവം കൂടി പങ്കു വെയ്ക്കുവാനുള്ളതായിരുന്നു അയാൾക്ക്‌ സൗഹൃദം. Wise ആയ ഒരെഴുത്തുകാരനു മാത്രം എഴുതാൻ കഴിയുന്നതാണ് നോവലിന്റെ ഈ ഭാഗങ്ങൾ. നമ്മുടേതിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായൊരു തരം മൂല്യവ്യവസ്ഥയുള്ള കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ എഴുത്തുകാരനായിരുന്നു Márai എന്നതും സുവ്യക്തമാണ്.

Long winded but I was hoping they would lead to a more profound moment of discovery or realization and dont feel like we ever really got there.
