Leigh Bardugo

Six of Crows is the first installment in Leigh Bardugo¿s new series which takes place in the same universe as her immensely popular Grisha trilogy. If you are unfamiliar with her debut series, this one might be a little confusing as it is written with the understanding that the reader already has a grasp on the world involving Grisha. Bardugo¿s writing immediately drew me in, her world is rich, her characters are complex, and the story line provided plenty of twists that kept me guessing till the end. Though the characters in this novel are in their teens, they could have easily been written as older characters with burdensome backstories and intelligent personalities.

really nicely written. I feel very attached to the characters, even when there were at least 2 significant things that bother me about each character (in a good-characters-are-flawed way). love how the characters really feel like theyre seventeen or eighteen like the dialogue is perfect for this. the skills everyone has make sense and arent too far fetched for the back stories given. and i love the romance (even the straight romance... that's how u know it's good).

This was really well written. I enjoyed the complexity of the characters and the banter between them. The actual heists were a bit far fetched but entertaining. In my mind the characters were not 16 and 17 year olds. The banter and maturity just does not fit that age group. Looking forward to part 2!

how do i even start? i can't believe i finished this in one sitting. i could not put this book down.

everything about it was amazing. the characters, their personalities and relationships, the scenery, the plot, the writing, all of it came together so perfectly to create something in mind mine i could never dream up on my own. the imagery was so strong and beautiful, it was like i was just watching a movie. 

the ending was very satisfying, personally, and i'm about to immediately dive into the second book.

Set in the universe of Bardugo’s debut trilogy (

 follows a heist by six criminal teenagers from Ketterdam, Kerch — or fictional Netherlands, if you please — in the Ice Court of Fjerda — again, fictional Scandinavia, as I understood — where they are tasked by a Kerch merchant with breaking out a Shu scientist held prisoner for inventing a drug that heightens the Grishas’ powers, and eventually kills them from the addiction. 

For the sake of transparency, finishing the 

 trilogy a few years ago was a small torture for me. I found the characters flat and boring, and plot predictable and corny — the typical ingredients of an ambitious YA series that falls short on invoking the desired effect, and progressively loses its momentum book after book. That is to say, I was hesitant to take 

 off my bookshelf and give Bardugo another try, even a few years later, even after stumbling upon countless online reviews claiming that 

 is better, but it's only one crucial component that makes it so — the characters. For me, 

 is a prime example of compelling characters making an otherwise, yes, predictable and corny plot that much more enjoyable and interesting. Don’t get me wrong, there was not one moment where I didn’t know exactly what was waiting for me on the next page — but anticipating to see a character’s reaction, or if they happened to be the narrators of that chapter, their thoughts and feelings, still made me turn the page. And that’s what matters most of the time when looking for a quick, feel-good reading experience. 

It still brought negatives to the table, though, because I cannot bring myself to lie, there comes a point when it finally makes you feel somewhat cheated, and it was — fortunately, or maybe not, depends how you look at it: the journey or the destination — the ending. Because when you set up a character to be the smartest person in the room, in every scene they are in through each of the six points of views of this book, I’m sorry but it’s only going to come off as ridiculous when they end up royally fucked over by the cheapest and most obvious trick in the book. (A trick that was painfully clear for the reader to see, and anticipate in horror to happen since the page the final antagonist was introduced on, because he cannot just 

 notice it, the criminal mastermind that has the city at his beck and call despite his young age, when it should be the first thing to raise red flags in his head if he actually had as much sense as the book wants me to believe he does.)

I choose to look at the journey, which allows me more room to say I enjoyed reading this book and give it a good rating, and be excited to read the second book of this duology. Because the characters and their dynamics really are that fun.

I was initially worried about the relationships — our six characters are basically just three couples, not that tightly woven all around as each mostly keeping to a partner throughout the story with a few and far between out-right friendly interactions with the others outside of what the job requires. Which sounds like everyone’s nightmare high school friend group, doesn’t it? I hold out hope that the friendships get more developed and get more showcased in the sequel, but I think the romantic interests were set up pretty well already. We have pairings in various stages of a relationship — scorned lovers finding their way back to each other, close companions growing more aware of their feelings and accepting them, trying to figure out a way for these feelings to exist in their lives, and strangers meeting for the first time and beginning to grow a seed of affection in their hearts throughout the journey together. 

I also like to believe that Bardugo’s prose grew as well, though my memories of the writing style in 

 are hazy at best, I only know for certain that I had problems with that as well back then, but found myself in awe of certain passages in 

. The chapter of Inej climbing the incinerator shaft stayed with me for days, it definitely finishes in front as the strongest chapter of this book for me.

I loved this book. I feel its one of the best in the genre I've read. It was a written heist which I have never read before. It really felt like you were assembling a gang of misfits. 

It also felt like the most wild DND adventure going off the rails. It felt like the random wack ass shit my friends would do. The characters were all very unique and had such interesting dynamics. Nina and Mattais's romance is like amazing which is likely a very unhinged thing to say. Reminded me of my own DND characer HAHA. Really enjoyed and can't wait to read the next in the series.

I find the story a bit underwhelming. I wanted to get invested in the story but the it was slow paced and the characters did not read as teenagers but like people who are in their mid twenties. I was so confused for the first 100 pages, because I felt like I'm reading a story from the middle point, so many names and places were mentioned without any explanations. Also using Dutsch words, without mentioning any English definition was very confusing.

I understand that it's a duology but I would want to get closure at the end of a book, it felt like that it was a longer story cut in half to encourage the reader to read the second book as well.

Este libro tenía mis expectativas muy altas, y ver la reciente serie de netflix basada en todo este universo solo hizo que crecieran mas, me parece que fue un poco desventajoso haberla visto antes de leer la duologia pero eso no cambio mi modo de ver a los personajes. Estas seis historias que se conectan entre si son de lo más fascinantes, me encanto el poder ver (o en este caso) la historia desde los distintos puntos de vista, me parece que eso lo hace mas única y a su vez mas intrigante, pensaba que mi personaje favorito seria Kaz ya que su personalidad es muy atrayente pero Ines que ha llevado todos mis suspiros y gritos de fan loca, esta chica alias el espectro me tiene tan enamorada que iría ya mismo a alistarme en su tripulación cuando consiga ese barco que tanto desea, en el momento que se da cuenta que al fin encontró su propósito en la vida y que ese dinero por el que arriesgan sus vidas la llevara a cumplirlo mientras escalaba por la chimenea casi derritiéndose me llevo al alma. Nina y Matthias tiene una historia muy hermosa pero oscura que lleva a esta humilde servidora a fanguirlear a morir, me parece una Grisha súper poderosa que sabe lo que quiere y hace lo que sea para conseguirlo, Jesper y Wylan me tenían muerta de la risa con sus interacciones y para mí el ver que Jesper es mucho más de lo que se deja ver me encanta. Todos los planes que se maquinaban en la cabeza de Kaz eran increíbles, cuando estaba segura de que entendía algo BAM! Resultaba ser una cosa completamente diferente, me parece que esta todo súper bien pensado para que el lector quede en la locura. Sin duda ese final no me lo esperaba pero a la vez estaba modo alerta por si pasaba cualquier cosa, de todos modos me llego la mandíbula al suelo cuando me di cuenta que YA ME LO HABÍA TERMINADO, cuando lo termine le di 4 estrellas pero al meditarlo y consultarlo con mi almohada, y por el hecho de que no dejo de pensar en el, sin dudas es un libro de 5 estrellas.

The perfect book.

Want a book with great world building? Six of crows!
A book with incredible character depth? Six of crows.
A book with an amazing plot that keeps you hooked throughout the whole reading experience? And wouldn’t you guess, it’s six of crows.

And if thats not all I need to say, let me tell you more.

Six of crows is aa story about 5 teens who team up to pull of the ultimate and utterly impossible jail break. Each for their own gain.

You live with them through every second of struggle, you learn about them and get to know them.

So much so that when they’re happy, you’re happy. And when they’re sad, you’re sad. And when they find the slightest glimmer of hope you’ll pray and beg for them to stay hopeful and find their way out of their own troubles.

You will so innocently and unknowingly fall in love with each and every single one of these characters, and you’ll even find yourself missing them. This book is everything it needs to be, it’s the perfect amount of tragedy, betrayal and loss mixed with love, friendship and overall awesomeness. 

If you haven’t read it, read it. You’ll never regret this decision in your LIFE.

I just have to say since this is a most asked question, you def don’t have to read the shadow and bone trilogy before reading this!! If you would like to learn more about the magic system and politics of the world then sure! Go for it, but it’s absolutely not necessary.

A flawless heist. The perfect plot. And the best characters. I’m completely blown away — I LOVED this. It was so funny, atmospheric, tense, twisty, unexpected. The Shadow and Bone trilogy was okay… but now I’m so glad I read it because I was able to jump right into this world without much explanation. And my god. These characters. Inej? Kaz? Nina? Jesper? Wylan? Matthias? I love them all. Cannot wait to read the sequel.

Jan Van Eck a member of the Council comes to Brecker pleading his help . 
A drug has been created by a man called Bo Yul-Bayur ( <-- I know strange name ) that's poisonous to human kind but powerful to Grishas . But , it does more than just amplify Grisha' powers they make them want for it , crave for it , they would do anything to get they're hands on the drug after tasting it . But afterwards just one dose of that baby and they'll become invincible . They could do things that are unimaginable , things that people would've never dreamt of .

(3.75) THIS BOOK WAS SO FUN!!!!! I loved the concept and the characters. The ending was great and I loved the character building. In the first half of the book, some more interesting things could have happened but no complaints. Still, I do not think it is Victoria Schwab level. reread six of crows after nearly 3 years and my opinion on this book changed a lot. 
I actually enjoyed reading it this time, understood what the characters were doing and wasn't so lost like I used to be 3 years ago. 
when I read it for the first time I liked wylan, now I really really adore kaz. he's such a complex character that pretends to be tough and not caring about anyone when in reality he's just afraid to love.
the book was funny and also made me cry several times and I think I appreciate it for that. enjoyed this rereading more than anything. I definitely recommend it!
