Dentre as tragédias gregas que chegaram até nós, As Traquínias, de Sófocles (496-406 a.C.), e o Héracles, de Eurípides - que ora se publicam conjuntamente - são as únicas que trazem o grande herói Héracles (ou Hércules, na mitologia latina) como protagonista. A ação da peça de Sófocles se inicia em Tráquis, onde a esposa de Héracles, Dejanira, aguarda o retorno do marido, afastado há tempos do lar para a conclusão de seus doze trabalhos. Considerada por Ezra Pound como "o ponto máximo da sensibilidade grega", As Traquínias é apresentada aqui em edição bilíngue, na rigorosa e inventiva tradução de Trajano Vieira, acompanhada de um ensaio da célebre helenista inglesa P. E. Easterling.
