En el tercer libro, Work in progress(3.5/5★), nos centramos en Amelia, quien por azares del destino acaba contrayendo matrimonio con un escritor al que no suele reseñar de forma positiva en su blog. Este autor, Thomas, está obsesionado con hacer que a ella le gusten sus libros, y cuando se conocen en una firma de libros a la que ella asiste, intenta persuadirla para que sea buena con él en su próximo artículo, ya que ella ahora está trabajando para una revista literaria. El caso aquí es que Thomas no sólo es un escritor sumamente famoso y exitoso, sino que es una persona súper problemática y rodeada de escándalos en su vida pública, así que su nueva agencia le sugiere hacer algo que limpie su imagen y este decide proponerle a Amelia un trato en el que ambos ganan. Ella se casa con él y presenta la imagen de hombre de familia, y ella está cerca lo suficiente para escribir sobre su vida, a eso le sumamos que ella será su lectora beta para la nueva novela y que le dará crítica constructiva para que sea la mejor que ha escrito hasta ahora. A este punto suena como la mejor trama de todos los tiempos, si me lo preguntan. Pero no. En realidad, al principio me estaba gustando mucho, pensé que este era el bueno, pero al final se me hizo taaaan cursi. Y para que yo, que amo leer cosas cursis, diga eso la cosa tiene que estar intensa. Literal todo el asunto de Thomas siendo todo grandote y protector y Amelia siendo pequeñita y frágil no me gustaba del todo, pero cada vez que se confesaban su amor y estaban juntos las escenas me daban grima. Era demasiado. Y me gustó que no fuese una relación abusiva, y a decir verdad era bastante sana en comparación al resto, pero siento que la autora trataba demasiado y era muy obvio. Quería que quedara claro que estaban enamorados y nos lo repetía a cada página, y solo se volvía excesivo y molesto.

i think this finally put the nail in the coffin for me and romance. the main characters’ views were so promising, but of course it became a hypocritical and ironic mess as the story progressed. it starts out saying things like romance isn’t predictable and treating your partner badly is unforgivable, and then the story became exactly what amelia claimed to hate so much. not to mention the fact that i had to skip all of the smut because it made me ridiculously uncomfortable for some reason?? i don’t know how to explain it but this story made me feel so icky — and it’s supposed to be sweet and funny. but i’m glad i read this because i *hope* i’m ready to give up on this genre that’s given me nothing but problematic one star reads this year.

Maybe it was me, or maybe it was the book, but this one started off strong but ended up losing steam. Parts of the story were cute, but there were some cliches that had me rolling my eyes. All in all, it was a cute read but I think it’s forgettable overall. My first Staci Hart and, while it wasn’t a total hit for me, I’m still planning to read more from her.
