Maybe the most entertaining, least wonky book I've read on organizational structure. It is light on specific prescriptive approaches, but the key takeaways could be applied in almost any organization. It certainly challenged me to rethink team interfaces at our company.

Die gute Botschaft für Veränderungswillige: Es ist noch kein Meister vom Himmel gefallen. Die schlechte: Es gibt nur eine temporäre Stabilität, man muss in Bewegung bleiben. Die Autoren Vier-Sterne-General Stanley McChrystal war zuletzt Befehlshaber aller US-amerikanischen und internationalen Streitkräfte in Afghanistan. Zuvor war er Direktor des Führungsstabes und Kommandant des Joint Special Operations Command. McChrystal ist derzeit Senior Fellow am Jackson Institute for Global Affairs der Universität Yale und Mitbegründer der McChrystal Group, einem Beratungsunternehmen, in dem Tantum Collins, David Silverman und Chris Fussell seine Kollegen sind.

Here are my brief notes from the book; my favorite aspect is his evolving leadership style from command-and-control to empowering. Leader as gardener and not chess master.

The connectivity of trust and purpose imbues teams with an ability to solve problems that could never be foreseen by a single manager—their solutions often emerge as the bottom-up result of interactions, rather than from top-down orders.

The role of the senior leader was no longer that of controlling puppet master, but rather that of an empathetic crafter of culture.

McChrystal calls this a "gardener" role.

The temptation to lead as a chess master, controlling each move of the organization, must give way to an approach as a gardener, enabling rather than directing.

The gardener cannot actually “grow” tomatoes, squash, or beans—she can only foster an environment in which the plants do so.

First I needed to shift my focus from moving pieces on the board to shaping the ecosystem.

Creating and maintaining the teamwork conditions we needed—tending the garden—became my primary responsibility.
