Where swarms of minnows show their little heads,

Staying their wavy bodies against the streams,

Tempered with coolness. How they ever wrestle

With their own sweet delight, and ever nestle......

Of this fair world, and all its gentle Livers

Spangler of clouds, halo of crystal rivers,

Mingler with leaves, and dew and tumbling streams,

John Ashbery

Selections from the first three decades of the poetry of John Ashbery, author of Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award The late John Ashbery was a poet whose “teasing, delicate, soulful lines made him one of the most influential figures of late-20th and early 21st century American literature.” (The New York Times) This important volume gathers work from his first ten collections of poetry, from Some Trees, which was chosen by W.H. Auden for the Yale Younger Poets Series (1956), to A Wave (1984). The 138 poems in this volume include short lyrics, haikus, prose poems, and many of Ashbery’s major long poems, including “Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror,” offering a beautiful distillation of the first thirty years of his remarkable, groundbreaking work.

The Ecclesiast is one of my favourite poems in this anthology. I first read it while studying Authorship and Intentionalism in my philosophy course on Aesthetics. Ashbery was the professor's favourite poet, and quickly became one of mine. His work is infinitely inexplicable, and I like that. It seemed to capture something niche about that period of my life that I wasn't able to fully articulate;  "You wake up forgetting."   I can't claim to have any idea what Ashbery was thinking about when he wrote this poem. All I know is that reading it felt like sitting in a calm sunrise during that split second when everything is quiet and the world seems to click into place and you're washed over with a near unprecedented clarity. "Tomorrow you'll weep – what of it?"   There's this quality of confident nonchalance, and honestly,  I don't know if it exists in the words or if it's my own imposition, but it is soothing in an oddly existential way.

"There was a key to everything in that oak forrest
But a sad one. Ever since childhood there
Has been this special meaning to everything.
You smile at your friends joke, but only later, through tears."

John Keats

Presents a selection of works by the early nineteenth-century romantic poet.

NAME- Selected poems by John Keats
AGE RATING- 12/13+
BOOK RATING- 4.5 Stars

Ever since the 6th standard, when my Literature marks plummeted due to my ‘wrong’ analysis of Wordsworth’s poem, ‘Daffodils’; I have hated every single poem from the Romanticism Era. If you saw a 10-year-old me tearing up a hundred copies of Romantic poems, it would be no surprise. The hate was deeply rooted inside of me and still is, at least it was till a few days ago.
My mother had picked up this book, against my will because apparently, I needed to read more poetry from the Romanticism Era. I had low, well almost no expectations from this book because well, of the 10-year-old me.
As soon as I opened this book I was surprised (well, I was more sleepy since these poems were long, and I do not advise you to read them at 11:30 in the night).
This book is the best poetry book I’ve ever read.
The imagery is amazing, you could close your eyes and imagine the scenes, the romance playing out between the characters. You could sense the leaves, the flowers, the pure passion put into these poems.
The Greek Mythology references are the cherry on top. The sheer godliness and the prettiness paired with the beautiful writing, make this an excellent read.
But, I would take off 0.5 stars for the same Greek Mythology references. I liked them, but not many people have a vast knowledge about the topic, making it harder to understand the emotions.
But even without knowing anything, you could feel the pure, raw emotions in these poems, the passion, the feelings, the personality.
Well, I could go on about this book. But, what's important is that you, dear readers, read at least one poem by this author and feel what I can.
Poetry is emotions, poetry is feeling what the poet felt.
So dear reader, can you feel what I am saying, can you hear the voice in your heart that shouts, “Read! Feel!” Dear reader, can you hear it, can you hear me, shouting and screaming, imploring you to read this book?

John Clare

Clare's highly personal evocations of landscape and place are some of the most poignant lyrics in English poetry. His celebration of all forms of natural life and his laments for the death of rural England grew directly out of his intimate knowledge of the labourer's life, the wheatfields and hedgerows of his village in Northamptonshire. This authoritative and engaging selection includes poems from every stage of Clare's poetic career, organised by theme, from 'Birds and Beasts' to 'Madhouses, Prisons and Whorehouses'.
