The Drowned World

The Drowned World

A thrilling adventure with “an oppressive power reminiscent of Conrad” (Kingsley Amis), considered by many to be Ballard's finest.

** spoiler alert ** liked: writer does a good job of setting the mood, the heat feels oppressive, and as mentinoed by the author a few times, ~enervating~. really liked the idea of the core memory dreams that afflict various people disliked: the sluggishness that you feel because of the heat also infects the pace of the story- it feels like through about 50% of the book not that much really happens. Keran's rescue feels a lot like deus-ex machina, although it is somewhat salvaged when it doesn't stop Kerans from carrying out his nihilistic obsession with going south.
