F. Scott Fitzgerald

Tony Tanner

F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby brilliantly captures the disillusion of a society obsessed with wealth and status. Young, handsome and fabulously rich, Jay Gatsby appears to have it all, yet he yearns for the one thing that will always be out of his reach, the absence of which renders his life of glittering parties and bright young things ultimately hollow. Gatsby's tragic pursuit of his dream is often cited as the Great American Novel.

“Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

Still thinking about this and how I would answer it.

Every one suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.

He smiled understandingly - much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced - or seemed to face - the whole eternal world for an instant, and then concentrated on

with an irresistible prejudice in your favour. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey.

THE GREAT GATSBY, F. Scott Fitzgerald's third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his new love for the bearutiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted "gin was the national drinnk and sex the national obsession," it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s.

The Great Gatsby is one of the great classics of twentieth-century literature.

One hundred years have passed and the green light beckons. We are the “careless people”. In the ego-extended 21st century, hustling bond traders, carefree socialites and mysterious men of unexplained riches remain aspirational. We talk of “late stage capitalism” like some dyspeptic disease, and lick it up mightily. Every area of human endeavor has become a market. Our identity can be charted by social media presence. Influencing has moved from the personal to an avocation. Our ripple of excess is quantified - measured in attention and clicks - and we seek to make sense of ourselves through the prism of an inequality, longstanding injustice, and a confluence of market forces. Though unrecognized in its time, or at the time of Fitzgerald’s death, “”Gatsby” rocketed into our collective consciousness as the great modern American novel. As many have pointed out, it is remarkably dense - touching on every great theme of the American experience (race, industry, aspiration, gender dynamics, education, nostalgia). The words paint a remarkable portrait - who can forget Daisy’s voice of money (p.120), the literal glow of Gatsby at first introduction (p.89), the ceaselessly watching eyes of doctor T.J. Eckleburg (p.23). It crackles, it rips; like Nabokov’s “Lolita” it roils with beautiful words in a desolate landscape. Reading “Gatsby” this time, I felt my middle age pragmatism impose itself on the romantic lens I would have given it 15 years prior. The whole lot of them seemed less interesting and shallower than I remember. My trust in Nick as a narrator was heavily shaken on this read, I found him to be less remarkable, pulled about by richer people, and glorifying a ghost of a man that he never really knew. It is remarkable how Fitzgerald’s book never sways into believing the gilded glamor - the party never seems that great, the Buchanans always seem like awful people, and no one seems to have any kind of happiness worth having. The fatalistic ending, that many take to be a statement on the American Dream or our national character, though beautifully expressed, feels like the statement of someone who has not been released from their own callowness. The pace is remarkable. There is so much build up to meeting Gatsby. I can only imagine my first reads I impetuously pushed through the first sections. Now when I read about Nick's early encounters with the Buchanan's, it's relevatory. There is so much here about comparative wealth, and ego insecurity, or just establishing some honest benchmark for the Daisy/Tom relationship (obviously not a great marriage). The action scenes - a party, the car accident, the pool scene with Gatsby, are almost always built like portraits. Swept up by the metaphors and elegant imagery, the substantive events can spill out. Our disillusion of the mysterious stranger Gatsby is never a sharp cut, but matches the aching pattering of a disintegrating heart. Yes, I will ceaselessly read on, oar against the past, and continue to read this book, and find new meaning. It still feels like a book that should be so simple, and maybe it’s because it’s basic story is. But like all of us, there is a depth, color, shades, embedded meanings, and treasured to be trove. We can’t turn away, because if we did, who would we be? --------- Review from May 13, 2013 One of our few shared literary experiences as a culture- "The Great Gatsby" is fated to be tested as the great American novel, and themes are borne against it - opulence, social mobility, the self-made man. At it's heart it's a lovely story. The seemingly perfect and magnanimous Gatsby's created a fabricated future to win his Daisy and make right the humble and unbearable past. The characters are strong. The reader is always alert, as scenes and situations change dramatically quickly. And with every read, I am impressed by the subtle shifts of emotion, and demeanor of the characters. There is an unshakable sadness I get with every read, and the last paragraph captures the mythical American spirit like nothing else I have read. Gatsby continues to shake, inspire, and romance, and like the most mature artistic statements augments with time. [Read in 2000; May 23, 2009; May 16, 2013, May 8th, 2025]

were not invited – they went there.’

Widely considered F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece, The Great Gatsby is a tale of excess and obsession, and a work of classic

Beautifully written. Can honestly say it is probably one of the best books that I have read.
It's absolutely devastating at the end, which I wasn't expecting (though I did start reading it with no idea what kind of a book it was). None of the characters are likeable but you still get quite attached to them.
It's face paced so that I found it really easy to read but I feel like you could also spend ages just analysing every word of it.
There were also definitely moments where I actually gasped (maybe because I'm a bit sad and am entertained too easily) but nonetheless, it's not the ending or character development you would expect.
No wonder it's a classic.

I read this book when I was going through a lot of new emotions as a teenager, it really helped me understand longing, grief, love without actually feeling them. Years later when I did feel these emotions, Gatsby was someone I was relating to so much. I wish I had read this book at a different time in my life, but nonetheless amazing book, I would recommend to read after you're 20 though.

The modern (and in my eyes equally romantic) version of Gatsby throwing elaborate parties in hopes that Daisy would come is posting on your Story, waiting for that one person to see it.

Except Gatsby's version probably costs a little more money (but that depends on what you post on your Story :D)

The Great Gatsby (Collins Classics)

F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel, "The Great Gatsby," is often hailed as a literary classic, yet despite its acclaim, it left me with mixed feelings. While the novel is not boring by any means, it also didn't elicit a "wow" factor for me, ultimately earning it a modest three-star rating.

One notable aspect of the story is the complex relationship between Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway. The undeniable closeness and intense interest Nick displays towards Gatsby do raise questions about the nature of their connection. Some readers may interpret it as a form of unrequited love or admiration bordering on infatuation. While this interpretation adds depth to the characters' dynamics, the novel does not explicitly explore or confirm such feelings. "

The Great Gatsby” helps readers picture the roaring `20s vividly by featuring this era's allure, glamour, and dark underbelly. Fitzgerald's prose perfectly captures the opulence and superficiality of the era while also delving into themes of unattainable dreams, social class divisions, and the destructive power of obsession.

Despite these strengths, the novel didn't completely captivate me. While it provides a compelling critique of "the American Dream" and the emptiness that can come with wealth and glamour, I found myself longing for deeper character development and a more nuanced exploration of the themes. The narrative can feel somewhat detached, with characters that, while intriguing, often remain enigmatic and distant. The characters felt like they hadn't yet reached their full potential.

Great Gatsby

Incredibly well written in a way that leaves me bereft of sympathy for the characters. I enjoyed it a lot.

A true classic. I never read this book before and I’m glad I wasn’t forced to do so when I was in school. I think this book is far more profound when you’re in your mid twenties.

The Great Gatsby, by the American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, is one of the great novels of twentieth-century literature. Set in the Long Island of 1922, it provides a critical social history of America during the “Roaring Twenties”, an era that Fitzgerald himself dubbed the “Jazz Age”, known for unprecedented economic prosperity, the evolution of jazz music, flapper culture, and bootlegging and other criminal activity. A historic period when “gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession”, as classified by The New York Times.

If ever there was a book that can be called beautiful for the way it's written then this has to be it. Every chapter of this book gradually reveals us the man behind the myth that is Mr. Gatsby. The story isn't that dense but it's not about what it contains, it's about how it's described.

I haven't watched the movie yet, but couldn't stop visualizing DiCaprio as Gatsby.

So different from tender is the night, the other hit of his. But such a page turner! The first chapter is to be remembered forever and the last chapter is tragic. I, not knowing it is foreshadowed in the first chapter, was so intrigued in this.

Romance of the century. Deep, sorrowful, and full of words that flow like poetry.

there is a line which explains daisy’s voice to be “full of money” and this line sticks with me for a very long time…i think that a marriage, between buchanan and daisy is something only they can understand, it is not always about money. and i assume that, gatsby only thought of daisy to be with someone who can “afford her most” which is in fact, untrue. it is lineage. it is heritage. it is education and family. i always relate myself to gatsby for a very long time by watching the movie, making beauty to be something to achieve…fast cars, skyscrapers or a network of people. but when i read the book, clearly, gatsby does not have any lineage. he was not born into wealth but he had to work his way up. his backstory a little murky and his family a little unclear. this creates gatsby to be a “shady person” to me where else tom came from person a and goes to school b. i think what daisy really wants from gatsby is clarity. where is the truth in all of this mess. whereas, with tom it is CLEAR that this is a marriage, everything with him is factual and real. not an illusion and a party trick to please someone like the east egg-sters. i think…i would like to delve into this complex more,,,, perhaps in my own time.

This book is a love story told in a third person point of view. I loved every detail of the narrator’s friendship with the characters to the point where I feel his personal connection to Gatsby. So reading the last few chapters were sad and quite solemn. I just wish I saw how Daisy would’ve reacted with the unfortunate events of Gatsby’s fate. This book touched me to the point where I wonder what their life could have been if the accident never happened. And if Daisy would’ve stood her ground and left Tom for good. But the ending felt like we, the readers, were not meant to find out. Perhaps Daisy thought it was a good enough reason to erase Gatsby from her life and to fully commit to her daughter and Tom.
